Solved Additional languages still active even when removed

Hey all,

First post here after migrating from SevenForums!

I've got a bit of an issue though. A few days ago, I went into Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Language and added French as an additional language. I changed the input method for it to US-QWERTY and it offered to download an additional language pack -- which I did.

It decided to set it to my system language upon reboot. As soon as I got back in (which took some time, I'm only just starting French classes! ;)), I set English back to the system language, uninstalled the French language pack, and removed French as an additional language entirely.

However, something appears to be stuck. Windows still has that language configured even though it does not show in the Control Panel, and when I use IE (Chrome has been freezing lately), my spell check is in French, NOT English -- which is the default language. Resetting IE completely (in the Tools, Advanced menu) did nothing.

What do I need to do to fix this?

Here's a pic (Warning! It's a bit larger than 640x480). You can see the language selection "tool/widget" by the clock, and you can see the dialog that shows English AND French are apparently configured for use, even though the Control Panel window shows only English.

If anybody has any help, I would greatly appreciate it! :)

Hello Tehkwhiz, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Double check to make sure that you do not have any input methods other than US listed. If you do, remove them as well.
If nothing else, you should be able to turn off the language bar.
Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Hi Shawn!

Thank you for the welcome.

I followed the steps you provided, and "US" is the only input method.

However, the instructions for turning off the language bar say to uncheck the "Use the desktop language bar when it's available" tick box -- it's already unticked on my system. So why is it still there?

Another tip I noticed: When clicking "Apply language settings to the welcome screen, system accounts, and new user accounts" the dialog box says it "cannot read setting" for what the default language is. That tells me something appears to be corrupt...

Thanks again,

William

EDIT -- I re-added the French keyboard, clicked "save" in the Control Panel, then removed the French keyboard, clicked "save" again and rebooted. Windows now only recognizes US English as the only setup input method. The problem would appear to be solved. Thank you! :dinesh::D

Go ahead and post some screenshots showing your language Options and Advanced settings from the screenshot in your first post to see if they may show a cause for why the input language could not be read for your (current) account.
