    System Crashes When Running OCCT

    Hi,

As some of you may know from my previous threads that I have been having stability issues with my system in my sig. I've recently swapped out the motherboard to the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2. The system passes 10 tests on Intel Burn Test on maximum and also passes tests on Passmark Burn In Test. However, when I run OCCT the system will test for about 1 hour and then crash no bsod or restart just become unresponsive to any commands.

Aside from Prime 95 do you know what else I could try to test my AMD 8350 CPU with? The CPU is running at stock speeds and at default settings within the BIOS.

As I don't have any minidumps could someone advise if they would be able to take a look over the system and advise if there could be any software or out of date drivers that could cause this issue?

Many thanks for your time and your help.

Are you still having problems with instability with other programs or just with OCCT ? Although impressive looking OCCT is prone to crashing anyway. While doing testing you should run HW monitoring program to check for temperature and voltage settings while under load.
There are other testing programs you can use like CineBench or 3Dmark 11.

    Hi,

Yes the system has just frozen again this evening with no stress testing programs running. I had changed the timings and voltages for the memory the system ran OCCT for about an hour then froze I then loaded defaults in the BIOS and the system frozen within 5 minutes of testing with OCCT.

Do you think there could be an issue with a setting in the BIOS somewhere? Also would Prime 95 be good engouth to stress test the 8350?

At the moment I am running Intel Burn Test on 20 passes at maximum. If this passes do you think the CPU may be ok?

There's new version of Prime95 here : Download Prime95 - MajorGeeks maybe this one can stress better, older versions I used did not stress my system and can run forever even with this OC but OCCT crashes often with no apparent reason. None of the others did that, so my impression is that OCCT is not too stable by itself.
Intermittent crashes without BSOD are most difficult to troubleshoot but most common cause revolves around power supply, not only PSU itself but voltage regulation on the MB too. Actually, there's so many things that can cause freezing and lockups that just slow, painful and methodical testing can give a hint of what's going on. BIOS on factory default setting does not have to be right, so setting each parameter to manufacturers' settings in many cases is better than auto. One change at a time, then testing, return to previous setting than try another, etc. eventually you'll have to find the culprit. If setting CPU and memory voltage manually, set it a notch higher than recommended to compensate for variables.

Thanks, I'll try that version of Prime 95. Which tests should I select?

    Do "Blend" for start.

    Hi,

I ran Intel Burn Test last night on maximum with 20 passes and this completed fine. I have also been running Prime 95 on blend test for around 11hours and the system has not frozen or crashed.

Edit I've just tried 3D Mark 11 basic and the system has just frozen like when running OCCT. If I test with 3D Mark 06 the system does not freeze.

That's what I am thinking, do you know what other stress test programs I could use for the GPU? I'm also going to do a test install of Windows 7 and see if the freezing occurs under that as well to rule out any possibility of a compatibility issue with Windows 8.1
