    AOMEI Backupper VSS Erros Event Viewer.

    Hi guys,

    I was having some problems with my system and ended up posting in the BSOD forum. While I was there I was told about installing Windows 8 with UEFI and SecureBoot. I didn't know what it was up till then. Therefore, due to the problems I was having I decided just to do a clean install of Windows 8. I set the BIOS to SecureBoot and installed Windows using UEFI. After getting this up and running with no problems I decided I wanted to start making regular backups of my PC so I would have them if I had future problems. I read that AOMEI Backupper can backup GPT partitions so I make a backup of my up to date freshly installed Windows 8.1 x64 C: drive. When going through the Event Viewer to make sure none of my old problems resurfaced I found some errors from the backup process. Here is what the error messages say.

    Source: VSS
    Event ID: 8194
    Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.
    . This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

    Gathering Writer Data

    Writer Class Id: {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220}
    Writer Name: System Writer
    Writer Instance ID: {241ef03b-2a98-4c7b-80da-08379f5da84d}

    The error says something about being caused by incorrect security settings. Is anyone else getting this error? If so how did you resolve the issue? I am just trying to make sure this didn't cause issues with my backups. I don't want to end up having to do another clean install in case of a crash etc. I have emailed AOMEi but I haven't heard anything back from them.

    Thank you,

    That may not necessarily be connecetd to your imaging program. On the other hand vss errors are common. There are lots of reports on the macrium forum for example. Those usually prevent the image being made. Doesn't seem to be the case in your situation.

    I assume the image was created fine?

    These VSS errors are definitely causes by the backup software, but as far as I can tell there doesn't seam to be any problems with the images. It just piles up a bunch of these errors every time I use it. Its also really bugging me that it says its caused by incorrect security settings. I guess on the bright side is Microsoft can't even get their programs to run correctly without event viewer errors so can't blame 3rd party software devs. On Windows 8/8.1 the MS apps are always causing errors in the event log every time I run Windows update or disk cleaner even though I don't use any of them too. I didn't realize that the VSS errors where a common problem. If thats the case I will just ignore them.

    *Update - I just found a thread on this same issue with Macrium Reflect. For some reason this thread didn't come up in a Google search before I posted. I really didn't find anything on the subject except a bunch of really old threads. According to Macrium them this happens when Kaspersky scans the backup image. I ain't using Kaspersky so Vipre must be scanning the image. I'm going to see if there is any way to exclude scanning of my backup drive in Vipre, and see if that resolves the issue.

    Agreed. I get VSS errors when I make a system image through the file history pane. I don't use any third party AV.

    Thanks for posting that adamf. That tells me this can be ignored then. What had me concerned was it seamed pretty rare when I Googled searched the error and the error number and didn't find much information. However, after reading the Macrium forum and what you just posted I am no longer concerned with this. Sounds like a dummy light for Windows, and I thought they only had dummy lights in cars! lmao

    When I had VSS problems I was able to fix it using the info here:

    SafeBackup FAQ - Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) Troubleshooting

    What worked for me was method 2, doing the following in an admin CMD box followed by a reboot:

    vssadmin delete shadows /all

    Please note that this command will delete all of your saved system restore points, which are apparently just saved shadow copies. There may be other apps that rely on saved shadows, but I don't know of any.
