Why isn't there this same hysteria with Androids and the Android Marketplace/Google Play? Or iWhatevers and the Apple Store? I would say that Microsoft are giving you more choices than either of those platforms.
The way I understand it you're regular desktop programs, originally written for an x86 processor, won't run on Windows RT without being rewritten to run on an ARM processor. That would mean that Windows RT is pretty well locked into the App store.

Actually, your understanding is not correct. While Windows RT will have the classic desktop, it's only for Microsoft's own applications. The desktop won't be available to third party software.

As far as Androids go, there was no established collection of 3rd party software available prior to their introduction and the Android marketplace. So, nothing existed that consumers would want to run. As far as Apple goes, remember Apple fans love whatever they are given and they stand in line for it and sing it's praises. They are willing to pay more as their device is as much a status symbol as it is functional.

The "only" reason I am remotely interested in Surface as a tablet is because it's a full blown computer, rather than just another "smartphone" type device that runs "little apps". For me, the RT version of the Surface is dead in the water....unless it were $250 or less. Without the ability to run 3rd party software, it's nothing more than what we already have. So, I wouldn't call my concerns hysteria, but without 3rd party software support...."thanks, but I'll pass for now".
Thanks for the explanation/links, I think I understand a little more now. So yeah RT is dead on arrival for me too. I too like the idea of a portable touch+full keyboard combo thing rather than a smarthphone (which I can't type-on to save my life), but not at the expense of my third party apps. Have to say I'm still interested in the "MS Surface Win8 Pro" though.

Microsoft confirms dumping 'Metro' brand from Windows 8

Will take years to erase 'Metro' from industry memory, says analyst

...Late Thursday, The Verge reported it had seen an Microsoft internal memo that explained to employees the change was a result of "discussions with an important European partner" that forced Microsoft to "discontinue the use" of the Metro brand.

A replacement for Metro will be introduced this week, the memo continued, which hints at a renaming by today or Saturday. Until then, Microsoft employees are to use the phrase "Windows 8 style UI."

After a bit of googling - the rtm leak is not cracked.

Apparently it just runs as a trial. Might be able to do the re arm like you can with win7.

    It looks vile.

I woulld definitely not use the leaked RTM as a daily system. By the time the 30 days end, technet keys should be ready.

I think the reason might be Metro life style. You know the Metro Sexual attachment. I contacted Microsoft and ask them if that might be a problem. The rep stated no one would confuse that with Windows 8's Metro Desktop. NOW I'm wondering if it was brought up in the board-room and the consensus thought that might bring up questions. That was actually one of the first things that struck me when I installed the DP.

The thing I hate is how programs install items there you don't want taking up space and not creating desktop shortcut you can pin or drag into an addon toolbar.
It's the start menu. When you install new programs, they add themselves to the start menu. It's worked this way since windows 95. Also, it's the choice of the developer whether or not to add an icon to the desktop. Stuff like steam and firefox still does, bot a lot of other devs choose not to.
It's like going back to Windows 3.1's Program Manager except it looks much uglier and is less intuitive with its forced full screen navigation.
I would give 3.1's Program Manager far more credit for simply being the 3rd version B for 3.0 version of a then recently brand new OS to begin with back then. Three years later you saw the 9x era begin. TThe full Windows history is something to see at A history of Windows - Microsoft Windows

You got that one right! From the beta to the retail I always run a tight ship here!

I'm certainly in no rush to download anything. I still want to see a last RP install either on the second OS drive or on a VHD to look the rest over before deciding on which lower end edition if any to go with. No rush here for 8 however.

They'd better be careful if they do that though.

I think that it is because of all of the bad publicity surrounding Metro.
It's a standard idiotic corporate response to bad publicity.
"If we change the name, no one will notice it is still the same awful interface."

I worked for the monopoly phone company in Australia (during the 80s).
They changed their name and logo (twice since the early 80s) because of bad publicity.
