This will be Microsofts biggest ever flop, far bigger than Vista.

I have been forced onto an old Vista laptop which I upgraded to Win8 CP by way of my Win7 PC breaking.

Usually I like to be up-to-date with technology, and I had big ideas about Win8/Xbox360/"Next"Box/WindowsPhone interconnectivity in the future. But the more and more I use Win8 on a day-to-day basis, I am beginning to think it's small advances aren't worth the huge overhaul. It all feels less intuitive, and certain things needlessly take more steps to achieve.

One thing I like in Win8 is the new copy window, how I can pause/resume multiple files at once, and how they get added to the same 'window' rather htan ending up with loads of them all over the screen. However I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be a 'keep both files and add (2) onto the end of the name' option when you have two files with the same name. Only replace destination file, keep destination file, and skip copying the local file. This is very annoying, and is a detriment to the new copy system's handling of multiple files. Without the rename option I feel less safe about handling multiple files at once, for fear of accidentally deleting the updated version of the file etc.

Other times, explorer has taken easy to reach buttons and hidden them in the crappy Ribbon. Such as 'Empty Recycle Bin', which has moved from that menu bar. That button did 'not' need to be hidden under a new layer. Neither do the view options for files (Lists, Details, Large Icons etc). It just seems like the ribbon has buttons for the sake of having buttons. For example: No one on a desktop is going to click a file, move their mouse right up to the ribbon to press rename or copy etc. They're just going to right click the file and select the option there. I understand that is probably down to Win8 being on phones too, but what's wrong with click/holding to launch the right click menu like android phones do it?

The Start Screen would be fine, were it able to search everything at once, rather than making us take the extra step of searching for the file and then selecting file/setting/ap before we can see the results which are relevent to what we want.

All thse extra steps? Nah... I'll stick with Windows7 thanks.

I have been using windows 8 from the start as a dual boot with windows 7, the only time I ever go into windows 8 is to play wordament or mess around with apps, that is not a ringing endorsement.

I admit doing the same but that has more to do with the fact that I just want to stick to the environmemt I am acquainted with while I work.
Add to that that you know that W8 is a "volatile" environment being a preview and sure enough it's easily put aside once you've done the sightseeing tour.

Just a few hours ago I booted it up since I was instralling updates and I'm still impressed by how fast it is though. That part I like.

Windows 8 is modern day snake oil. If you buy it everything will be fixed and better for you in short order. Install Windows 8 and you will be able to enjoy the bliss of being completely lost and unable to find your way. It will remain this way because users will be too busy trying to figure out how to do things and this will linger until someone comes up with a substitute for the Start menu that makes as much sense as it does in Windows 7. So I will have Windows 8 on my machine, but for sure not as main operating system and it will remain a second class citizen until it grows up.

Reading all the negative comments on Windows 8 and how difficult it is actually makes me embarrassed to call myself a Windows user. I can't believe how anyone who has used Windows for a while can't figure this out.
I can understand how it may take an hour or 2 to figure out and some things longer but really some of this talk is really embarrassing. I can understand large businesses having a problem, but not home users.

What's embarassing is that it takes a seasoned Windows user 2 hours to figure out how a new Windows version works.....

"What's embarassing is that it takes a seasoned Windows user 2 hours to figure out how a new Windows version works.....". Life can be a bitch sometimes. I think 2 hours of ones life is little price to pay for something new.
Can you learn a new accounting programme or Adobe Photoshop in 5 minutes, even though you may have used other accounting programmes and other photo apps.
All I can say about all these complaints is that the people making them must still be living in the same village they were born in and driving the same car they first bought. Have you ever tried setting up a new PVR or even a video player, they are all different and take a little bit of learning.
I always thought Windows users were a little bit more adventurous than their Mac counterparts, looks like I was wrong.
This whole business reminds me of Apple Fanboys complaining how hard Android is, another falacy.

It's more embarassing for MS if you ask me.

Besides, W8 plain and simple does not bring enough to the table. It is hard to see it as more than W7 sp2 with a reskin.

The abysmal sales will I believe bear this out.

I believe this is why Microsoft is giving us a taste, so that the sales records won't be even lower than Vista's was. For myself it wasn't that hard to learn Windows 8, I guess it actually depends on if the person really cares to or not.
