Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the "Metro" thing supporting arranging two "Metro" thing apps side-by-side, reminiscent of the non-overlapping windows in Windows 1.0 and GEM, after Apple forced DRI to cripple the latter?

Let's just say it is an academic discussion. We will get Metro whether we like it or not. Those who don't like it, will just stay behind for a few years and get it later. Then the ones who were using it all along can teach them how to use it efficiently.

You have to be pragmatic about those things. I remember the big discussion about the new taskbar in Windows 7. Now everybody loves it. Go figure.

I think we might see history repeat its self, people hated Vista so MS tweaked it and called it Windows 7 and people loved it. So maybe when Windows 8 is called Windows 9, people will love it too!
Seriously? SERIOUSLY? Read my messages to understand why the Start Menu has always been horrible and for numerous reasons why the "Metro" thing is horrible. Then again, why bother? You seem to be one of those people like "Kat" I think it was who thinks "nothing is better or worse than anything else", so you won't understand any of it. I'm just highly amused so many people like you post in what I assumed was a forum for enthusiasts, when instead it's proved to be a forum filled with people who never figured out how to use Windows 7 effectively, in particular, the taskbar, because if you understood the taskbar, you wouldn't be bringing up the Start Menu. As I've said probably a dozen times by now, it's puzzling.
I'm only interested in why you hate it, but if you think the reason is to complicated for me to understand I leave it as that

Any idea how to do it -- any Metro app (Full Metro app -- not one that runs a program on the desktop) seems to go into SINGLE FULL SCREEN MODE.

Try for example the IE Metro app -- please show me how you get TWO websites to appear on the SAME screen (two separate windows). You can always go to the start screen to launch another app but the 2nd metro app (Real metro app as I said - not an app which runs from the Desktop) opens another FULL SCREEN window.

It seems really difficult to get this concept across -- but I'm sure most people on this Forum usually have several "Windows" open at once on their screens and I can't be the only person who wants to compare two documents / spreadsheets etc looking at them side by side.

And YES it CAN be done via the desktop -- but I'm saying how do we do this in METRO -- if it can't be done then there is no point in using Metro --and without Metro you might as well stick to W7.

Using the desktop in W8 requires an extra key stroke so I can understand why some want to retain the traditional Start Menu -- if you only want the desktop then one has to question whether this upgrade from W7 is either worthwhile or necessary -- particularly for corporate customers.

Google /metro two apps side by side/. It is possible, but it in no way makes up for the many things that make the "Metro" thing so bad.

@Jimbo45 yes sorry, I do get what you mean now, I think you have to look at the Metro apps as a extra to Windows, they are really suited to a phone rather than a business desktop PC. Just remove the apps you don't like and go back to your old programs.

    Hi there
I LIKE w8 -- but what I'm saying is that there is a SERIOUS deficiency in getting business users on board. Phones etc are suited to an app taking a single screen.

It *Should* be possible to design each metro app to have re-sizeable windows rather than use the full screen -- actually even on a phone I've sometimes wished for two application windows to be open side by side.

If this is impossible Windows startup could be in two modes "Tablet mode" which goes straight into Metro mode or "Classic Mode" which brings you straight to the desktop.

It's not easy as W8 will have to work for basically two totally different types of devices -- phones / tablets and traditional laptops / workstations.

    Cheers

    Here's an earth-shattering thought:

What if you used both Metro and the desktop, switching back and forth as you see fit?

Still don't get it? There is NO right or wrong way to operate Windows, just DIFFERENT ways.

Just because the methods of others don't suit YOU, doesn't mean they're wrong.

Nor are we 'Luddites' or 'unable to understand' the taskbar.

And, with over 25 years of experience, on multiple platforms,I do find your
'forum for enthusiasts' being 'filled' with newbies who 'don't understand'
somewhat offensive, as I am anything BUT.

This thread is about Windows, it's not a forum to diss those who prefer
to customise Windows to suit themselves.

You sound to me like the kind of elitist who's never wrong, even when they are.

A real 'My Way or the Highway' attitude.....
