Windows 8 and 8.1 Forums

This will be Microsofts biggest ever flop, far bigger than Vista.

Good post, Travis. We're not dealing with major moral principles here. Insults over Metro vs. Desktop, or even over Win 7 vs. Win 8 aren't called for.

Now, Vista, on the other hand...

This thread has begun to degenerate into a slanging match and become personal. Let newcomers to this thread express their own views but the rest of us have had a good say and are getting nowhere IMHO.

    You are right, geeks.

Let's hope nothing changes in Windows 8 compared to 7. Let's also hope technological evolution has ended, that the processors, RAM, GPUs, NICs, software, OS and so on do never change. No changes in software, no changes in hardware. Let us keep what is and never change it.

Everything is OK as it is now. Let's all join together and tell the hardware and software companies that we as computer users have got enough! We do not want anything new, we hate change and evolution. We want everything remain as it is now.

    Say no for development!

    Together we are strong!

I would be interested to see if Mr Sinofsky has the cojones to do anything amounting to a u-turn.
I doubt it. And it is probably too late in the development cycle anyhow.

Plus, they probably do not want to be faced with 2 OS versions which are difficult to keep in sync and expensive to maintain. On a mobile device, the traditional Start would not work. Just think how you would crawl thru 'All Programs' on a smartphone.

Ah, yes. The stupid, backward, insensitive jerks argument. Funny how it's never the other way around? No one who dislikes Metro says the equivalent about you people for liking it. Their arguments are - nope, not for me. You go use Metro all day long and love it. But for some reason that's not good enough. You've got to rip the critics to shreds.

Let me let you in on a little secret: Metro haters don't hate you. They hate Metro. You act like you're the one being attacked, and I get the impression you really believe you are even if you don't realize it.
I don't hate anyone Travis, just know-it-all bigots
    This isn't the Alamo!
I do agree though, Metro is ugly and designed by backward morons with no art concepts what-so-ever..They should be shot!

LOL - why not just say what you mean - no point in mincing about the bush.

Thanks for the link - I think most people have seen Vistart already, though.

Lots of people - around 50% of those who have tried it.

    .
And that 50% is only a small portion of peoples using computers. Peoples who download Windows 8 Preview are computers literate, wait to see what the mass will have to say, from what I can see they are not even interested to know that Microsoft will release a new OS, do you think they gone run to buy it? If no one buys it, no one will develop Metro apps. Microsoft put all their cards in the same packet. It will have been more prudent to let peoples install Metro if they like. Peoples will keep their Windows 7 and with the money save they will use it to pay a part of their new iPhone or iPad

    Hi Col,

If you take a look at the video Lex Luthor posted - the first 30 seconds will convince you he is not a Metro fanboi.

    It is quite funny.

I much prefer my improvised start menu.I don't like the idea of installing applications just to run the start menu..
I looked at Seven start and it was horrible, there's nothing worse than free-ware that has a really obvious "go pro" button on the UI!
Why on earth would anyone want a pro start button ?

Make your own start menu like I have

As for Microsoft designers, I thought they'd use more advanced tools than MS Paint....I used to work in a kindergarten/nursery and the kids there were more advanced artistically than Microsoft designers...........Metro is appalling from a design perspective

Actually I was referring to clicking on a ordinary desktop shortcut. Your method may well be my answer. Thanks. With explorer left-clicking the taskbar icon a second time does nothing.
You know, that further illustrates my point that people conflate the forever clunky, modal desktop with the incredibly useful, usable Windows 7 taskbar, and that they don't understand how to use the Windows 7 taskbar, because if they did, they wouldn't be relying on the desktop (and Start Menu) to organize and launch programs. Neither of those things have ever been any good for that. The Start Menu is a pain to navigate and goes away when you select something from it, discarding all your navigation. The desktop is hidden most of the time, such that to get to what's on it, you typically have to temporarily minimize all your windows. The "Metro" thing combines the worst aspects of both. It is highly concentrated fail.

And his method is your answer. And left-clicking the running Explorer icon doesn't do "nothing"; it brings its window to the front, just like the taskbar always has. That was its original purpose, in fact, to make it easy to find open windows.
    Hi there
the problem isn't actually running TWO instances of IE (or any other application) but having them BOTH OPEN AT THE SAME TIME ON THE SAME SCREEN -- for example comparing the contents of two web sites / two photos / two excel spreadsheets etc etc.

I'm sure there is some deliberate obfuscation on this point but all you metro lovers here's an EASY one for you --PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO COMPARE TWO PHOTOS on the SAME SCREEN USING THE PHOTO APP.

Similarly I might want two instances of Windows explorer on the same screen to compare directories -- this is only possible currently using the DESKTOP.

    Cheers
