I have two iMac's and finding software is like hunting for Jack the Ripper.......It doesn't exist!

In contrast, Windows 8 started up, twenty minutes later all my drivers were installed and within two hours I had a Windows 7 start button

It took a bit of lateral thinking but not rocket science to fix!

The power and restart button I found within 2 and half minutes just by exploring the Metro screen!

I like the Metro start page, but I'm interested in how you got the start button back?

I don't really want to post a link to it on here being a new member but I can PM you with the link to the tool I used..

Its sadly not as simple as registry entries in the consumer preview because the start menu has been totally removed..Reg entries only worked in the Developer preview

I have a video on YouTube where I create a simple start button here and the link to the tool is in the comments of that tutorial..
As I said in the previous post, I have two different start menu's, one I created myself and one that was initiated by the tool in the comments of that tutorial!

    Vista and Win7

They always said the CP release isn't finalized and I bet the reactions on forums such as this will influence what finally appears.

Criticism of the Metro Interface is so heavy that MS is bound to let us keep the desktop as well.
I think you guys are dreaming. Who wants to go back to that old stuff. And that would be the first time that developers listen to customers on a major strategic decision. They rather have their OS sit on the shelf for a while than revert the direction they are headed. They will make enough money in mobile.

If I understand you correctly, to open 2 copies of a program pinned to the taskbar simply click it once to open it. Then right click with the mouse (on the taskbar) and the 3rd option up you can select to open the same program a second time. Is that what you are after doing?
Actually I was referring to clicking on a ordinary desktop shortcut. Your method may well be my answer. Thanks. With explorer left-clicking the taskbar icon a second time does nothing.
You know, that further illustrates my point that people conflate the forever clunky, modal desktop with the incredibly useful, usable Windows 7 taskbar, and that they don't understand how to use the Windows 7 taskbar, because if they did, they wouldn't be relying on the desktop (and Start Menu) to organize and launch programs. Neither of those things have ever been any good for that. The Start Menu is a pain to navigate and goes away when you select something from it, discarding all your navigation. The desktop is hidden most of the time, such that to get to what's on it, you typically have to temporarily minimize all your windows. The "Metro" thing combines the worst aspects of both. It is highly concentrated fail.

And his method is your answer. And left-clicking the running Explorer icon doesn't do "nothing"; it brings its window to the front, just like the taskbar always has. That was its original purpose, in fact, to make it easy to find open windows.

Lots of people - around 50% of those who have tried it.

I don't know why you keep questioning that.

It might suit you - it does not suit everyone by a very wide margin.

I can see no use for it whatsoever. For me it is a waste of space.

It might be easier for those with poor vision, perhaps - but there must be a better way to help those folk than putting all this useless stuff in the o/s.

They rather have their OS sit on the shelf for a while than revert the direction they are headed. They will make enough money in mobile.
I fear you may be right about that. I would be interested to see if Mr Sinofsky has the cojones to do anything amounting to a u-turn.

@Lex - you can pm me with the link to that start menu creator, if you would be so kind.

Edit - I just looked at your link to the video - do you mean Vistart?

You might prefer Start Menu 7

Ah, yes. The stupid, backward, insensitive jerks argument. Funny how it's never the other way around? No one who dislikes Metro says the equivalent about you people for liking it. Their arguments are - nope, not for me. You go use Metro all day long and love it. But for some reason that's not good enough. You've got to rip the critics to shreds.

Let me let you in on a little secret: Metro haters don't hate you. They hate Metro. You act like you're the one being attacked, and I get the impression you really believe you are even if you don't realize it.
