I am not keen on the intrusivenes of metro, it makes it difficult for the particular things I do.

That might not apply to everyone.

Offer it as an option - an additional feature - and everybody is happy.

As being one of the few that is getting on alright with Metro (only because I disabled UAC and don't use it for apps lol), I definitely agree that this is the decision that MS needs to make.

WS, did you give the users some introductory instructions - like a 1 hour review of the main features??

Nope, we did not; we didn't give them anything training going from Windows for Workgroups 3.11 to Windows NT or to Windows XP or to Windows 7, so we kept it the same. We wanted to see what would happen. Since Windows 8 is so different we would obviously have to have training. But that will cut severely in to our budget as there is none for training. We were treating this test as with any other Windows deployment.

I understand your point and yes with training I am positive they would get it, but how does one provide this to 10,000 users easily with no budget? So I go back to my original request, Microsoft please make Metro UI optional (enable/disable). Once disabled you have the ORB (Start) and a normal Windows 7 desktop. This way the enterprise world will be able to deploy it and provide training for tablets as they are introduced using Metro IU. Then at a later date as users have purchased Windows 8 at home, used Windows 8 tablets, or have experience with Windows 8 in some fashion, we can convert them to Metro UI within the Enterprise. -WS

I see your problem. If there is no buget for education, it is really difficult. In my company each employee was entitled to 2 weeks education per year. I think that was a good policy because it kept the vitality of the teams and was also very motivating. I think it is short sighted to have no education budget. But that is not my call.

I agree I keep telling the CFO and VIPs this in budget meetings, but it always falls on deaf ears! -WS

Unfortunately, training is always one of the first things to go when budgets are getting thin.

You have to develop a scenario under the heading "Value of education". Not a bunch of motherhood, but scenarios where you can show the value in Dollars and cents. That may sound difficult, but I think it is possible. CFO's only listen when they see nums.

When we started pricing operating system software in the 80's, I introduced the concept of "Value of software". The development labs were moaning and whining because now they had to justify what they were doing and sell that to the customers. But they did it (after a lot of kicking) and it was a great success.

What sort of amount of training do you need on Windows 8, it is Windows 7 with a gui on top. A one page PDF in large type, it actually would only take about 3 or four lines just to get the basics, left click, right click, hover mouse in left corner, hover mouse in right corner, two clicks to shutdown, one to get on the desktop.

Help I'm stuck, can you repeat that please.

Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 was a lot harder than this.

If the guy in the video had a small PDF on the desktop he would have nailed it in two minutes.
