Windows 8 and why it's a desktop disaster

I sat staring at the screen, my emotions lodged somewhere between dumbfounded and despondent. From what I was seeing, I knew I'd made a horrific mistake, and restitution must be made immediately. I'd been told time and time again there was no going back; what's done is done, you have to accept it, there's no living in the past. But a violation this total demanded only one response from me.
I had to uninstall Windows 8, and I had to do it immediately.
What possessed me to put the latest version of Microsoft's flagship operating system on my home computer this past fateful weekend, I'll never know. To some extent, I'm sure, it was the persistent ministrations of my colleagues Michael Muchmore and Samara Lynn, who had been trying to sell me on Windows 8 for months. I'd dabbled in every major version since the Developer Preview, and never warmed to it, but I'd somehow succeeded in convincing myself that this time things would be different.

Yet the instant I saw my entire 1,920 x 1,200 monitor consumed with only the Windows 8 update notifications the rest of the screen a field of white vast enough to drive Alaska to fits of murderous envy it was clear I'd been drastically mistaken. Windows 8 is not, by any stretch of the imagination, for me. And it's time I stopped pretending otherwise.

Sorry it was not intentional I came across it on a different URL - it impressed me the first time and I guess it did the second time.

I would personally wait til windows blinds 8 or until a theme with transparency is released, but really the default DOES look way better than XP but I don't think aero will be gone for long with modders out there.

What I usually do when a new version is released, by it, try it out, see the new features, and go back to the previous release until SP1. The desktop uses around the same amount of resources even without aero, if you have 64GB don't be surprised if your system is using 3.5GB of memory as that's normal as Windows calculates this by a percentage of your available resources and 3 is nothing when you have this much ram.

I do expect MS to add aero back or something new but with some eye candy by sp1 or sp2 or even windows 9. I think Metro is a one time thing for desktops.

I installed Windows 8 Pro as an upgrade to Windows 7 a couple days ago on my touch-screen PC, no problems. This morning after I turned on my computer it auto updated something, then crashed all the data on my hard drive, hundreds of file system errors that Windows 8's repair program could not fixe. For the past three hours I had it wipe my hard drive clean (it's only 43% done) so that I can install it again. If it doesn't work this time I'm just going to reinstall Windows 7. I'm glad I have two PCs at home.

I've heard that this is caused by incompatible anti-virus software. Did you install any third party anti-virus?

Thanks a lot. Now the thought has occurred to me, "I wonder if Ballmer could make Madeline Kahn burst into song?" Thanks so much for that imagery.

    Hi Guys

I have given Windows 8 another week of tinkering to see if I can love it more......jury is still out.

As a retired gent I have time to spare so spent days trying to get Metro set up so that I could stay in it, ie not constantly land back in Desktop, and I have almost succeeded. I said almost.

Added Google Search, not bad browsing experience, added my Gmail account to the email app, works OK, then it all went bad. I need a Movie Player and Music Player. The players that came in Win8 are terrible, won't play Vobs, trouble with subtitles, and who wants to watch a movie with two big white stripes top and bottom. Gave up on them and tried the Store. Downloaded two or three of each and while some handle Vobs and Subtitles OK they are still pretty crummy compared to either the usual suspects on the desktop (XBMC, Media Ctr) or available on my Galaxy devices. Couldn't find an Office app.....!

    Summary

Until the apps get much much much better no one with any meaningful requirements will be able to stay in Metro for long. Which brings us back to the question...why have it...just use the desktop with Classic Shell for a start button.

PS. I don't have a Surface (and won't) but I don't know how anyone will use it properly with such poor apps. Does it have a desktop?
