lost ability to load PDFs-how to fix?

For some time now, I cannot load pdf files, even though I have installed and updated Adobe files. This problem started (perhaps) when I installed something called PDF Viewer, some months ago. I have deleted that but still I can't get pdfs to load. I am very computer-ignorant and have no idea how to begin fixing this.
Thanks for any help. Sara Ciborski

Try this. Right-click a pdf and select "open with" then select "choose default program" and see if Adobe is listed there. If it is, select it and set it as default.

Open with - Change Default Program in Windows 8

Also check "Default Programs" in Control Panel. There may be some left overs of PDF Viewer, causing an association to pdf's in the Registry. When you try Adobe reader or Nuance's PDF Reader PDF Reader - PDF Reader | Download Free PDF Reader Software - Nuance can you even open up the PDF?

When I right click on the pdf I want to open, I do NOT get a choice of "open with." I checked my defaults in control panel and Adobe is already listed as the default for opening pdfs. (Adobe XI (11.0.06).
Then I tried to use the program that was offered here (it seems to be gone now) for an in-seconds "fix" . This gave me a download of pdf_14395_stf, which I then downloaded, but the result was that I was given a Yahoo toolbar and an ad for a bunch of Yahoo games. !! What the heck is going on here? Anyway, problem still not fixed. Any other suggestions?

Here is a direct link to Adobe to download Adobe Reader if you trying to use it in Metro I can't help, but the desktop version should take over and open PDF for you.

I know that Nuance should not give a choice for Yahoo Toolbar. If you are working in Metro, that is half the problem. We need to get you into the desktop to do this. Metro has too many issues to list, in how MS has it set up, when it comes to finding solutions in that area.

still no results on loading pdfs, but new twist

Dear Friends who have been trying to help.
I went to the Adobe site and downloaded the application, and got a message saying "application is already installed" .... which I knew, as it is listed as my default.
Now I notice that SOME pdfs do load. In some cases I get the box that asks, how do you want to open this and it works when I click Adobe. BUT some (most) others don't give me anything but a blank sheet when I try to load.
SO I'm wondering if the problem is located in the source, that is, in how the site posting the pdf posts it. Are there different ways of doing this?
But still, if other people can see these pdfs, then I should be able to also.
I do not have "metro" or whatever that is. I am using Windows 8 with Firefox on an HP desktop.

    Any more suggestions?
    Sara

Go to Default Programs in Control Panel. Find pdf in the file list, and associate with Adobe. Metro is that fugly interface with all of the tiles. Desktop is what looks like the old Windows 7 desktop. If you have 8.1 installed, you would automatically go into the Older desktop, but can choose to stay with the Metro Tile interface.

Hooray! I have solved the problem, though none of you provided the answer. This is what I did:
When I right click the blank page that I was getting when trying to open the pdf, I was getting a box of choices that I didn't understand, most of them having to do with bookmarking. One of the choices is "Save as"
I tried clicking this and it gave me a saving box with "save to" given as Adobe Acrobat Document. I saved it this way.l
Then...I closed my browser and clicked on the Adobe Reader icon on my desk top (I don't know any other way to get to the reader). Then I clicked File- open- and went to list of downloads, and there was the pdf in question, which then opened for me. It seems a roundabout way to get what I want and I'd love to know a shorter one, but for now I will mark the thread as solved. And by myself, probably the least computer-savvy person on the planet. Thanks for trying to help, anyway.
