I am a Windows 8.1 desktop user. What I did was to make a shortcut to the desktop and pin it to my taskbar. Upon opening that, I put my search terms in its search window. Double clicking on a result brings up the new item, while leaving the list of found items intact. Also like the ability to right click on a result, then hold shift key + Open file location, takes me to the location while leaving the original search results intact.

Although I also have a "This PC" shortcut on the taskbar, it will search in a lot more places than I usually need (like my backup hard drive) and takes much longer. The shortcut to the Desktop is much faster for what I usually look for. This is especially true if I want to search in 'file contents' which I usually do.

Open the File Explorer, type your search term in search field. You can open files from search results, it will remain open. You do not need to download and install any third party tools or programs for this.

See the tutorial, scroll down to Option Two: Search in Windows 8

Windows Search in File Explorer searches on the drive or folder which is currently open. If you have a shortcut to Desktop which opens the Desktop folder, only this folder (Users\Your_username\Desktop) is searched but nowhere else. See the screenshot examples below:

Search the whole computer, all drives and all folders and their subfolders:

Search drive I: and all its subfolders:

Search the folder Documents on E:\Users\Kari and all its subfolders:

    Kari

My current problems may have started last week, when my antivirus program (AVG) notified me of something that it considered suspicious behavior - something that was being attempted by a file at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS\X64\3\OLD\1\PRINTCONFIG.DLL, and asked me what to do about it. The two...
Hi, I like to be able to search for a file quickly and efficiently, preferrably without involving third-party apps. So when I press the Win key, I like that I can type into the search box directly, but it's annoying that the search scope is pre-set to "everywhere", as for some reason that's...

mail by microsoft frustration in Browsers & Mail
I like the Windows 8 mail by microsoft app but it has one quirk that is driving me crazy. Maybe I've missed a simple setting to get it to stop. When I'm reading my mail it will refresh every few minutes. My inbox list disappears, the little circle twirls and when the list comes back I'm back...
Time and date frustration in Performance & Maintenance
