FYI, My HP Pavilion's shutdown totally quit working, along with sleep and everything else. Nothing worked to fix it... ended up refreshing the PC, which took it back to Windows 8.0. Now it sleeps and shuts down fine. My sleep settings worked for a short time with 8.1, until I uninstalled a version of Windows Office 2010 and reinstalled a 2012 version, along with an English 2007 Home version in 32-bit (My wife is Korean, and we need both).

Something in that process is what started my sleep/shutdown issues, I think.

I am back on 8.0, and won't be upgrading to 8.1 just yet. I find it more important to be able to shut my computer down and/or sleep properly. Before, it would just hang on a black screen and race the CPU forever, causing the fans to go nuts.

I have over 6gb of Ram, by the way. It came with Windows 8.

possibly because you refused to try what my2cents suggested, I think this is a hard solve because so many different causes, maybe a driver or software update could cause it or fix it. for me the issue of 10 seconds different bootup is a no brainer .good luck ,I hope someone with better suggestion will come along

Yes, we do, but you told us you're going to wait until Summer to install more RAM. So, although you're looking for another solution, most likely none of us is aware of much of anything that will help until you get the additional RAM installed.

The first advice a tech will give to someone with a slow computer is to upgrade his/her RAM. A screaming fast motherboard with the fastest CPU will run like crap with only 2 GB RAM. As 2Cents told you. The simplest and most efficient upgrade is to add more RAM/DRAM; and the faster it will run.

According to your system specs, you have an Intel Pentium Dual-Core 3.0, which is a pretty decent machine; however, with each new operating system from the time of the CPU manufacture, the more stress is put on a system. I don't remember exactly when the Dual-core systems first came out, but they're not the newest technology, which is not to play down the value of your computer at all. In fact, when I buy new equipment, I always opt for "last year's model" simply because it's good enough for me. That said, this Windows 8 "last year's model" came with 8 GB RAM! So, I'm guessing that Windows 8 needs more RAM than Windows 7, although I'm guessing that if I took it back to bare metal, even Windows 7 would scream with 8 GB RAM!

So, to quote my mother, who was full of old sayings, "Stop beating a dead horse and buy the additional RAM when you can." Your computer will thank you.

Also, as a FYI, under General Posting Rules: 2) No useless posts, e.g., thread bumping, useless one liners, junk posting to increase post count, and identical multi-postings in different forums.
