Well, I took the dive and install the currently leaked version of update 1 for Windows 8.1. I installed the following updates:

First I installed the following roll-ups:
1. KB2883200
2. KB2884846
3. KB2887595
4. KB2903939
5. KB2911106

Then I installed the Update 1 updates:
1 KB2919442
2 KB2919442-1
3 KB2919355
4 KB2932046
When that’s all done Update 1 is installed. It does take a bit of time so be patient it does work fine.

My impressions and thoughts:
1. Changes to start screen:
a. Only big change is when you right click on the app icon you can directly perform functions such as resize, uninstall and remove from start screen. The difference is you don’t have to go to the bottom of the start scree to accomplish these tasks.
b. Value: It’s a nice add on. Is it needed?? Yes and no. I like it but the previous way of accomplishing this takes was not that hard to do.

2. Changes to the desktop:
a. Not many other than you can pin the apps to the taskbar and it makes it easier to use the apps within the desktop.
b. Value: It’s very nice and it’s very well worth the upgrade, IMO. I just like having direct access to the apps that I use the most right on the taskbar and not having to go to the start screen.

3. Other thoughts:
a. I use Classic Shell and that makes my navigation of Windows 8.1 much easier for me at least. And I think using this will reduce some of the complaints that are made against Windows 8.X in general.
b. In addition with the option to directly booting to the desktop Windows 8.1 is now a very good OS, IMO.
c. Finally, I’m really looking forward to the final release of Update 1 and Windows 9.

There are also a minimize _ ,and a close X button on a toolbar for Metro Apps. Move your cursor to the top of an open Metro App and you'll see it. Also if you move your cursor to the bottom of the screen and the taskbar will pop up. I like having the close button. I wish the taskbar wouldn't auto hide though for the Metro Apps.

I don't like the sound of that.

I think I'll wait for the official release from Microsoft. :)

That's probably best. It's fun to mess around with but it's not mind blowing.
I played with it but I ditched it, mainly because it was taking up too much precious space on my way too small SSD!

Where do you get the leaked version ?

There are several around at the moment.

Frankly, for the average user who has automatic updates turned on, I don't think a difference will be noticed, apart from the huge size of the update.

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.

I just noticed that. Thanks for pointing it out for me and I like it as well. The changes are subtle but they make 8.1 nicer to use overall.

Does it mess up your installed programs ?

Your settings & files & folders ?

Not one bit. The updates work just like the ones that are performed when the normal Windows updates take place.
