Migrating Win 8.1 to new SSD

Trying to migrate my system from HD to new SSD. I have system image saved to an external HD via USB 2.0, and also to DVD's.

When I try to restore from the external HD, the recovery window gives me only the option to restore to C: (system), when I want to restore to the SSD.

Restoring from the DVD doesn't work either.

Is migrating possible without 3rd party software? If not, any suggestions as to which will work with 8.1?

Why don't you install a fresh copy of windows 8.1?
The other thing is restoring an image is good for the same material only.

I second that motion! However, be advised that a clean install will remove your current partition structure and replace it with either a standard Legacy or UEFI structure so I'm hoping you made your OEM recovery discs during setup just in case you need to go back. Now, as far as trying to restore an image to your SSD, there could be issues (even if the entire OEM partition structure is imaged and restored). Specifically, the restoral process may not set the partition starting offsets properly for optimum SSD operation (can't say for sure because I've never done it that way). Also, your new SSD must be larger than you existing hard drive or the restoral won't work anyway. However, if you don't see any roadblocks, I can tell you that Macrium Reflect Free will create the proper image structure for you and restore it to the SSD as well. It also has a drive cloning option that I've never used. Anyway, if you want to try it, you can get it here:
