This is kind of driving me a bit bonkers now, as I am trying to organize the files on my system, and am consistently butting heads against this problem. It always seems to be the last file I highlight. In other words.. I have two directories open on the screen, and am simply looking to drag files/folders from one directory to another. To do this, you almost always have to highlight the folder you want to move, and doing this seems to put a lock on that folder. If I highlight more folders, it seems to be ok, except for the last one I highlight will always fail to copy.

Any way to prevent windows from locking files in this way?

It is definitely not a specific file. I am trying to organize 100's of files. The same file that one second is locked, I can get it to move y selecting it first in the next group.. It is just the last folder I select that is getting locked, or at least so it seems. The files are open no-where else in the OS. This happens all the time to me, but it has annoyed me enough now that I felt obliged to post.

Here are few more things that could be locking the file.

-indexing service
-anti-virus software
-skydrive

Indexing doesn't lock files. SkyDrive does - I've had this problem. AV, well YMMV.

Unless I am completely wrong when you open a file (that is resolve a pointer to the space you are interested in) you then choose if you want to open a record for update and therefore lock it (because you may want to change it) or you open it for read only.

Indexing service opens for read only and therefore doesn't lock. If it does then it is a MS bug.

Since your username is musiclover, could those files all be related to music? If so, do you have any music-related executables running in the background that might have a catalog link to those files in question? If so, try killing the music-related executable and see if that allows you to move those files thereafter. However, if this happens on all file types, then please ignore my suggestion. In summary, I firmly believe that something has established a link to those files but I cannot explain why it only appears to be applicable to the last file in the selected string.

Good luck,

The issue appears to have been the skydrive app running in the background. Dang thing seemed to want to lock anything my mouse highlighted, or the last thing it highlighted in any case. Simple solution there is to kill that crazy app and insure it never re-opens. Walla. Thks for the help folks!

I've got a similar issue with SkyDrive locking http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/41228-skydrive-how-do-i-remove-file-synchronisation.html

Perhaps I should do the same as you and drop it but personally I find it to be useful.

EDIT - it is Voilà not Walla by the way - I'll go and surrender in a corner with some cheese now :)
