Today's Windows 8 update (from patch Tuesday this week) installed Bing Desktop. Now I have this ugly green desktop, and Bing does not show up in the installed applications.

Suggestions welcomed...

The whole story is that after the update on my Toshiba S855-S5381 today, I brought one of my apps after a few minutes the screen went black. After a some re-tries and getting nowhere, I pressed F12 to go into the screen that gave me a choice to go back to the only restore point I had...right before the update. I did that but Bing Desktop is still there (surprises me).

I concur, if you have a restore point use it asap.

I have notices that Bing DeskSlop is being FORCE-INSTALLED for us, this I like not one iota, and I offer this suggestion:

1) Change your Windows Update Prefs to "Never automatically download ANY updates"

2) When you check for updates, always DE-SELECT any preselected updates

3) Right Click on ALL Bing programs and choose "Hide"

4) Never download any "Security" downdates, only download the regular "Updates" - You can however download all Dot Net "Security" updates - these are the ONLY security downdates that are really important.

I do not depend on Microsoft Updates for my security, I depend on clever programming of my Firewall and my Router to keep &*&&&%d's out of my machines. But if a hacker wants IN, nothing I can do, and nothing Microsoft can do will keep them out. So I try to stay under the Radar in certain BBS's - And those who know me by now know, this is hard for me heh.

If you locate Bing, you could delete all of them.
Choose for them to go to the Recycle Bin.

Make a restore point too.

This is risky.Try it at your own risk.

I don't like the idea of deleting stuff from the DISM (WinSxS) folder... That's where the image is stored, right?

I thought that's what WinSxS was... I don't know if Bing is stored in the Components Store... Do you have Bing Desktop installed? Because all of the Bing-Related folders are all in WinSxS per your picture. I would imagine that the Component Store holds the image containing ALL Programs, including those you do not have installed (?).

So, you can remove those folders and it does not affect your system or DISM component store?

I don't know, I read somewhere that DISM uses the files in that WinSxS folder, is that wrong? I was looking that up, cos I wanted to know where the component store actually was...

Here is a link I found useful.
Expand Method 2.

.NET Framework 3.5 installation error: 0x800F0906, 0x800F081F, 0x800F0907

I do not have Bing Desktop.
It is an abomination.

So, you can remove those folders and it does not affect your system or DISM component store?

I suggested sending Bing to the recycle bin & making a restore point in case deleting Bing caused problems.

I don't know about WinSxS.

But all the Bing things in it, I suppose, are there to repair Bing.

I agree, Anything "Bing" is a abomination. Any program that asserts it's installation is hideous, including Googol Toolbarf.

In fact, ESET and Malwayebytes BOTH are including Googol Toolbar as a VIRUS and Unwanted Spamware.

Maybe it didn't affect me because I have metro disabled. To disable uac completely, I went into the registry and disabled it from there, which in turn snorks all things metro.(I'm ok with that)
