Box around desktop icons when mouse hovers over

I can live with it.
But I use Start8 to bypass metro screen
I also have settings under Advanced to not display boxes around icons, yet I still get a box around a desktop icon when my mouse hovers over it.

Tried all I know how.
Thanks in advance
Peter

What happens if you choose Adjust for best performance?

I also tried unchecking Show translucent selection rectangle then logged off and on but it had no effect I could see.

I was always of the impression that those are indicators of setting the desktop icon cache. Right clicking the Desktop and choosing 'Refresh' usually fixes that, but may return if you change the desktop background, or move your icons around.
(I could be mistaken though)

David, I think you are correct. For me, 'View►Large icons' reveals the placeholder.

If the OP would post a screenshot so we could see his icon box like we did, it would clear matters up. :)

Near as I can figure, when you log out or lock screen and return, pressing a key or mouse clicking shows the last folder or application accessed, but again, 'Refresh' stills clears the box/shadow.

Sorry to resurrect an older post, but I'm seeing this now and I really don't remember having it before. I know there was always an outline selection box but it was not very noticeable like it is now.

I just finished the upgrade to 8.1 Pro and noticed the translucent selection box around desktop icons when I ran the mouse pointer over them. I find it very annoying.
