A cry of help from one whose laptop refuses to screenblank and also to go to sleep. I've tried the usual by going to Power Options and making sure everything is in sync there but nought works.

I'm wondering if the following will help. Will the download work in Windows 8.1. I am referring to what is pasted below ...

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/16695-windows-go-sleep-enable-disable-windows-8-a.html

To Enable Sleep in "Windows To Go" Workspace
NOTE: This is the default setting.

Hey mate,

Don't use that tutorial, as it should not apply to you and your windows 8.1 (basic) version. That one is for the enterprise version, as stated:
infosmall1.png
Information
This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable standby sleep states (S1-S3) on the Windows 8 Enterprise "Windows To Go" workspace USB flash drive.
Unless you use hibernate, try disabling it: Hibernate - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums - the reason is probably to do with the hardware/drivers of some computers, and the fact that they sometimes have problems with this feature.

Use this tutorial to change power options - scroll towards the bottom to change to the 'sleep' state: Power Plan Settings - Change - Windows 7 Help Forums

Nothing is set to automatically hibernate Dusty. Also, I am using Windows 8.1, not Windows 7. Any other suggestions?

Those links are to the more popular windows seven forums, but they are the same for windows 8 and work just as well. Did you complete them?

In addition, make sure windows has all recommended and important updates installed. Is this your computer: Toshiba L675?:
If so, go to the Toshiba support website and install drivers for your windows 8.1 computer, either 32 bit or 64 bit. If you don't know, look at the first part of this tutorial to find where that info is located: Computer Name - View and Change - Windows 7 Help Forums - in Control Panel\System and Security\System

Try temporarily disabling hibernate in order to see if there is improvement. If not, go back:
So, after following the advice in Post 2, if it doesn't help, then choose the options for hybrid sleep in the tutorial in Post 2, unless you prefer hibernate only (so then choose the advice for hibernate settings in Post 2)

Rhetorical question: Might it be yet another case of Norton's excellence shining through?

Only time can provide answer to the great mystery.

^Excellent advice.

I don't know what Antivirus you have, but please tell us, and we can check to see if that is the problem. Also include any mention of non-Microsoft firewalls, cleaner or optimizing programs, non-mincrosoft defragmenting softwares, etc.

I've used Norton products since '92 ... nay, this is not Norton's fault. This is usually the avenue one takes when we can find nothing else. This problem only began a week or so ago.
I'm using an ASUS ROG (see my specs). I use Diskeeper and have for years. This again is not the problem. No other firewalls than Norton. Hibernate is disabled in the Power Options. Hybrid options are off. All drivers are up to date including Windows 8.1. I've even tried the all in all fix which is the infamous Reboot and that doesn't boot out the problems either.

The "I used it for years" argument doesn't work because these products have updates. Sometimes, unintended problems crop up, whether or not they are 'good' programs.

We are only attempting to pinpoint the issue, you can choose whether to uninstall a product or not, but that only means the problem is that much more unlikely to be solved.

lol nah, it's first step always 100% of time when I give advice for any computer problem ever.

It is the reason why bsod analysts use the term "notorious" when describing any known defective driver; stems from "Norton".

Thanks for the reply(s) and efforts. Of course I'm unable to say an update from Norton cannot be the culprit but I'm also unable to say a Windows update isn't the culprit either. But having been through the "uninstall Norton" too many times before, you'll understand why I'm slow to accept that suggestion right off the cuff.

I will take that course if there is nothing else that you folks can think of.

I'm slow to use Registry cleaners but what do you folks feel about those and would you recommend them?

Again, I appreciate your feedback.

Understandable, since everyone has their own opinions, especially about Antivirus programs.

Does the 'lastwake' command help pinpoint the issue, or does your computer not log the info? This is from post 11

Also, I do not recommend registry cleaners, as windows 8 is pretty slim and it isn't required. But if you have an urge that you must scratch, the best is Ccleaner. But be careful. You've been warned ;)

Ok, so the problem on your machine becomes the problem for everyone else, until you decide to try the most obvious thing to try first?

That's not good troubleshooting procedure or even considerate to people trying to help.

The results of removing Norton are invaluable, regardless of the outcome. For one, simply, I'm not interested in looking at the machine with it on there. If it's gone, and the issue still persists, I will fix it for you then.

I am able to say Windows Update for sure 100% is not the culprit.

Then either install another AV program, or call MasterChief a liar and reinstall Norton. Whatever you do, just don't call me names :D

baaaaahhhahaha meh - I made no claims about anything to be called a liar, in any case. lol :)

And Masterchief --- I'll take your advice and remove Norton. On my way to work so will give your suggestion a whirl later. Thanks for the advice. :)

hey, this issue has a lot to do with what programs you have open at the time. for instance, if you have audio playing, like windows media player or something like that, it will keep your computer so alert that it won't even blink (black screen) or fall asleep ever.

try closing certain apps, and you will find out what is giving your PC insomnia. Another thing to try: log off your account (Windows key+L), and log into another user account that doesn't have apps running. That might get your PC off its fixation on the audio playback that is keeping it too alert, without requiring you to shut down any apps.

by the way, do you have a mouse or other peripherals plugged into the USB outlets? that can also interfere with sleep. On my computer (desktop) the front USBs interfere with computer sleep, and the back ones don't give me so much grief.

Dustsailor - no devices given.
Shmu - no Media player(s) opened. I have some type of little tyke plugged into the USB port for this Logitech M560 mouse. I could try ripping this thing out of the USB port and try that.
And last but of course not least - uninstalling (completely uninstalling Norton 360) did nothing to fix this issue. Boy, that surprised me!!!???! :)
