Desperation with Windows 8 - can I trade down to XP ?

Just bought a new PC with Window8 preinstalled. Having struggled manfully for 4 weeks I just cannot get a feel for this new operating system. Files disappear, drag and drop has gone, right click is a thing of the past. As computer dinosaur, can I delete 8 and install XP ? I have two laptops that are running XP I appreciate that Windows will no longer support XP but I'm growing old and need to get on with my life !

I understand your sufferings But there may not be suitable drivers for xp, and that os may be very insecure in the near future. Better to opt for Windows 7. But before doing that, maybe try w8 with restored 'normal' functionality using classic shell (or one of the other start menu restorers) and test it out for while.

Yes, classic shell is the way to go, for sure. Classic shell will essentially turn 8 into 7. It is completely safe, extremely easy to use... basically set it up, and forget it.

Installing XP on a new computer is likely to be a serious challenge at best and futile at worst. You need a really compelling reason to choses XP over a more modern OS. I have used Classic start menu for some time and it makes Windows 8 much nicer to use. With a little work it is much like Windows 7.

Thank you all for helpful and relevant suggestions. I have installed Classic Shell and, as if by magic, all the user friendly elements of Windows 7 have reappeared. I shall leave Windows 8 sleeping in his cave and hope he is not disturbed until I have forged my sword of competence and donned my armour of knowledge. Good people on this forum - thanks again.

Install a third party start menu if need be, there are like five different ways to set up Windows 8.1 in whatever fashion.

Don't do Windows xp. One, you can't really buy it anymore, two, it's not going to get anymore updates in three months, three, it probably wouldn't run on such modern hardware and you'd lose out of some of your PC's capabilities due to driver problems.

Actually, go to the tutorial link in my signature and scroll down to Personalizations. That'll give you some understanding of keyboard shortcuts and things you can do. Also, if you're running on just Windows 8, get the free upgrade to 8.1. That'll alleviate some issues and make things make a bit more sense.
Update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 - Microsoft Windows
This is the link, go through everything, make sure you have things saved, and update Windows to 8.1.

Also, the Start Screen is just a GIANT start menu except you have more room to customize what you want on it. Things are very easy to put onto it. When you're on the Desktop, you can just right click on anything and hit Pin to Start. It makes a new tile or "icon" that you can move around. In 8.1, you can have the Desktop show first at start up, and the All Apps screen show versus the Start Screen. You can also do to the extent of doing an advanced thing and just uninstalling ALL of the apps you don't want like Xbox Music or Bing Weather so you don't need to see them.

Personally, I find that better than this...

Heres a thought... if you really REALLY like and want XP on your new laptop just take some time and find all the drivers you will need to make it work. That is the biggest hurdle to reverting back to XP on newer systems. I personally have not run an XP based machine for many years now.. however I am sure it can be done. Just go into your device manager and note all the hardware your laptop runs and then search for compatible drivers. If you can find them all then reverting to XP is like any other XP install outside of setting your bios to not boot via UEFI.

Its more work then I would do only to run XP but each to his or her own. It can be done though. And it will not take a rocket scientist to do it so if you feel up to the task.. then go for it.

Quite right. And if I wanted a touch-centric os, I would have bought Android.

See, we can do this all day.
    Thanks for playing...

Anyone here can probably see that Windows 7 is a lot better looking than Windows 8/8.1, at least when it comes to the desktop. Most of us Windows 8/8.1 users must have noticed that it is less resource hungry than Windows 7 not to mention faster. Does this mean MS has made a trade-off? Has MS...
