100% disk usage is rendering my computer unusuable

I'm running windows 8.0 and recently for some reason my computer's disk usage is constantly running at 100%. It will dip once every minute or so and load whatever I've clicked or typed and then freeze again.

I've looked extensively online and there is no exclusive cause or reason for this and seems to be a very tricky issue but I will explain what I have done so far:

    Disabled Supefetch and Windows Search
Ran chkdsk f command numerous times
Disabled and deleted the page file (that was setting limits)
    Tried defragging, disabling firewalls, etc.
Made exceptions for some files that may have been causing issues in automatic scans.

Been told numerous times to open Resource Monitor and check what's doing it and there are numerous things running at different times that this occurs, some are: NTFS Free Space Map, NTFS Master File Table, NTUSER.DAT files, random log files. There is no consistency.

    Basic specs:
    Windows 8.0 64-bit, 8GB Ram

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me insane

When that happened to me it was Kaspersky internet security that caused it. Since I uninstalled it and started using Microsoft defender with windows 8.1 it don't happen anymore.

I don't have any anti virus except Windows Defender and I haven't installed any software recently.

Did you try running Windows in a clean boot?

You mean safe mode? I've ran it in that and the same thing happens.

Could be a driver writing like crazy to the Event Logs. Have you check them yet for any clues?

Sure it's not the Optimize Drives service doing defragmenting?

Safe mode should do the same thing in a sense. What was the last thing you were doing before it started?

This set me on my way to solving the problem. Thank you so much!

Checking the event logs I kept seeing \device\raidport0 was issued whenever the spikes would. Turns it it's something to do with the PDI settings on battery saving power options. You can either disable this or put it in High Performance (deafult setting for PDI in high performance is 'off).

Once I did that the spikes stopped and just to be sure I enabled and disabled again and again and the patterns were consistent.

I'm not sure sure if this is a Microsoft issue or whether it is specific to my ASUS but after doing a little digging it's still inconclusive but looking more to be an issue with the ASUS itself.

    Thanks again.

See about updating storage driver from the chipset maker's site. You're welcome.

Hi, For some reason, the disk space usage bars in 'My Computer' are missing. Although they should be visible in 'tile view', I can only see the drive icons, not the bars. Interestingly, When I open a file in e.g. Word I can see the bars in the open file dialog (also in 'tile view'). I've already...
