winsat won't run in Windows 8.1 Pro w/Media Center

Hi,

When I run winsat formal -reset -v from an elevated powershell or cmd window, it completes in less than a second and produces no xml files. I have tried without success:

1. Clean boot
2. Safe boot
3. Updated video driver
4. Uninstalled all codecs with autoruns

I think the problem might be related to failure to run the NT Kernel Logger but I don't know what process could be tying it up.

I have attached the winsat log.

Ideas, anyone?

I dunno. I see a reference to "Basic Display" awfully close to VEN_8086&DEV_0A16.

Are you sure you have the latest driver installed for your Intel HD video adapter?

I'd be inclined to remove Bitdefender to test, if you care enough about it to try.

The graphics adapter is an Intel 7260. The driver rev is 16.6.2.1 (dated 10/31/2013) which I am pretty sure is the latest.

I will try uninstalling Bitdefender. I can live without the WEI specs, but I would like to know what they are for comparison purposes. Also, it just bugs me when things don't work as they should.

Thanks for the comeback.

Try this.. from an elevated command prompt..

Code:
Winsat formal -restart clean

All formal assessments will save the data (xml files) in %WINDIR%\performance\winsat\datastore.

Thanks to you both.

No joy yet I'm afraid. WinSAT prepop does not generate the XML files, which is the heart of the problem. I do like the presentation you get with Rhee's get-WmiObject approach though.

WinSAT formal -restart clean unfortunately does nothing because the datastore is already clean.

What do you think about rebuilding the WMI repository?

I haven't had a chance to try uninstalling Bitdefender yet. I'll post the result when I do.

Programs like BitDefender will interfere with WinSAT assessment tests. It is important to at least disable BitDefender while attempting to populate various WinSAT results.

WinSAT prepop does not generate the XML files, which is the heart of the problem.

Prepop should have generated XML files during initial setup of the system. Since you are attempting to update the display driver these files need to be deleted then recreated using WinSAT formal -restart from %WINDIR%\performance\winsat\datastore.

I do like the presentation you get with Rhee's get-WmiObject approach though.

The Powershell command used here is gathering data contained within the already present XML files.

**Taken from the log you posted.. "Error: Unable to start the Kernel Event Tracing Log"**

Here is another issue, this occurs when the log files needed to perform Kernel Event Tracing are at maximum size.

Open Event Viewer > navigate to Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Kernal-EventTracing

Check through the entries to see which errors or warnings are reported.

What do you think about rebuilding the WMI repository?

You can try to see if this will help.

Hi ectech! Some very cogent replies!

I completely uninstalled Bitdefender and WinSAT still does not work.

Running WinSAT formal repop does not generate either the XML or the etl file in the datastore directory. To be clear, there are no files there. The same is true when I run WinSAT formal -reset -v.

As for "Error: Unable to start the Kernel Event Tracing Log" the event log is pointing to the problem:

Warning: The backing-file for the real-time session "NT Kernel Logger" has reached its maximum size. As a result, new events will not be logged to this session until space becomes available. This error is often caused by starting a trace session in real-time mode without having any real-time consumers.

I don't know what to do about this event. I have plenty of physical resources: almost 4 GB of free physical ram and ~ 250 GB of free space on the SSD.

Is there a way I can increase the size of the backing store?

Thank you for sticking with me on this.

Before we get into anything else I think you should verify the integrity of the OS. Run through the following commands first, then we can proceed.

1) Press :winkey: + X > select Command Prompt (Admin) > Type each command below then press enter.

a) Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
b) Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth
c) SFC /scannow

After you have finished, download & run the attached file as Admin. Please attach the logs to your next post.

Hi again folks,

The logs are attached, along with a screen scrape of execution of the utilities. I see that some corruption was detected and fixed, but WinSAT still doesn't run correctly.

Just for grins I loaded the etl and xml files from another laptop and WinSAT correctly displays the values.

Also, running WinSAT cpu -compression and WinSAT mem run correctly. WinSAT cpu -encryption runs, but it reports Warning: The RDTSC to QPC delta is too high for each CPU core. All other WinSAT feature enumerations (e.g. media, mfmedia) fail.

This is clear indication that the etl file used to store information reguarding the Kernal trace events is full. You should look through the event log to see if it points to a particular file. If it does, delete it and rerun the bat file.

You might also need to salvage the WMI repository.

Run the command from an elevated command prompt.

1. Disable and stop the WMI service.
sc config winmgmt start= disabled
net stop winmgmt

2. Run the following commands.
Winmgmt /salvagerepository %windir%\System32\wbem

Winmgmt /resetrepository %windir%\System32\wbem

4. Re-enable the WMI service and then reboot the server to see how it goes.
sc config winmgmt start= auto

If the problem remains, then try the following steps to rebuild the repository:

1. Disable and stop the WMI service.
sc config winmgmt start= disabled (note that there is a blank between '=' and 'disabled')
net stop winmgmt

2. Rename the repository folder (located at %windir%\System32\wbem\repository) to repository.old.

3. Re-enable the WMI service.
sc config winmgmt start= auto

4. Reboot if the problem remains.

Ectech,

No joy yet, I'm afraid. There were no evt files in the datastore and the various steps with the repository did not help. I am starting to have other problems which are interfering with my work, so I am reluctantly dropping back to an early backup. I hate to do this in the middle of our debug session, but I must have a working PC again. Of course, sfc says everything is fine, but I am having installation problems, and I can't start the event logging service to name but two problems.

I very much appreciate the time you have put in on this so far. I will leave this thread open and get back to you with the status after the restore.
