Waking laptop from sleep with lid closed

    Hi,
first time here, I have about a week experience (pulled out some hair) with windows 8/8.1, but I consider myself pretty comfortable with Windows in general.

When my win8.1 laptop is in sleep mode, I can wake it with a mere touch of my external bluetooth k/b without any issues, as long as the lid is opened. If I close the lid, I can continue to use it as its connected to a big Samsung plasma tv. But if I let the laptop go to sleep (or put it to sleep myself thru the menu), I am unable to wake it back; I need to pull it out from a/v furniture, open the lid and press the power button.

Is this a win8 thing, an Acer Aspire thing, or worse it can't be done?
Anyone else able to wake from sleep their win8 laptop w/closed lid???

    Thanks

Try going into the power options and set the option for what to do when the lid is closed to "do nothing".

Yes, that was the first thing I did, as I said, I can close the lid and continue using the computer on external plasma tv and bluetooth keyboard-pad, that is as long as it doesn't go to sleep.

With lid open, everything works as expected I can wake it, use it, put it (or let it fall) to sleep.
With lid closed, I can continue using it, put it to sleep, but I am unable to wake it back.

In case it makes any difference, I've set the display on external only

Yes, the laptop is always plugged to a/c.
Exactly how would I "disable" sleep?

You go into the power options and set "Sleep after" to "never". You may want to turn hibernate off too.

I will gladly try this in a mo, but won't that leave the computer always fully powered on?

Yes it will, if you disable sleep it won't turn off automatically.

I set never for sleep, but it behaves exactly the same (all good with lid open, no go with lid closed)

You may have to look in the BIOS for a "wake PC when lid opened" or similar setting and disable it. Another option is to disable the switch that closes when the lid is closed. This would likely be a no going back deal. Check the bezel around your LCD screen. Look for a little protrusion sticking out usually down along the bottom near the hinges. If you see one you'll likely see a little hole on the laptop top cover. The protrusion goes in the hole when you close the lid and trips a switch. Opening the lid flicks the switch open again. If you carefully file the plastic protrusion down so the bezel is flat the switch will never get switched and the laptop will think the lid is always open. I would consider this a last resort type of deal though.
