Thumbnail pictures all deleted...how to restore

I have searched your data base and found some things on this but the one solution listed that I did find had instructions different then windows that opened up as I tried executing it.

My problem is that all my thumbnails that would normally show as the actual picture in any file or folder including ones saved to the desktop have all been replaced with a windows generic mountain and sun cartoon. The only way I can see what any individual picture file is ...is to physically click on it and open it up in a viewer. This is a royal pain to try to find any individual picture to say the least.

Attempts at trying to restore my computer to an earlier date to solve this issue are not completed ...I get a error message saying restore could not be completed...try choosing a different restore date.........I have tried them all.....same error message

Hello Stillraining, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It sounds like you may have disabled thumbnail previews. Enabling them again should have them show again.

Me & Brink posted about the same time.

    Sorry if I caused confusion.

OK 1/2 of the problem is fixed!...your Option 1 did the trick Brink...I'm the only user on this computer so maybe that is why your option 3 did nothing....You guys are great!

Now what about the restore issue...why cant I restore to a previously known and personally created restore point when all was well...or any restore point for that matter?.... I get an error telling me restore could not be completed.

No worries David ..I saw your post ...but like I said im pretty sure thats the one I tried before joining and posting my question with out any success....but thanks!

FWIW ...I had a free trial of AGV's PC tuneup and I am pretty sure it is what probably changed that icon image setting...when the trail period ended and I deleted the program due to all the insistent pop up advertizing I was getting that is when the problems all started.....AGV Free has really gone to the dogs IMHO....I use to think it was the best deal in town.....not so sure anymore..

This may or may not now have someting to do with my inability to restore my computer.

Did you get an error number with the message for the failed restore?

Could have been something preventing the restore point. A 3rd party AV or security program could sometimes cause this as well.

Did you see if it would let you do a system restore at boot instead?

I do not believe there were any error numbers...I didn't get an actual error message ..the box that usulay tells you your system was restored to xx/xx/xxx just told me restor could not be completed.

I'm reading through the info you linked me to now and will try the boot function route if I can figure it out......I'm an excavation contractor not a computer guy...lol

    I will keep you posted.

I acidently posted to your linked thread...tried to deleat it but your system didn't give me that option.

+1 in support to what Brink has said above about antivirus.

If you care about the ability to use system restore, you probably should uninstall AVG, use the tool to remove it as well, then set Windows Defender and Windows Firewall services to Automatic then start them too.
