Want to replace Windows XP Pro with Windows8

As everyone knows, XP Pro will be obsolete the first week of April. I have been looking at Windows8 as my chosen replacement but how do I verify or make certain my existing programs like Photoshop 6.0 (it's a 13 year old software but works for my business), Norton360 and others are going to be compatible when I get a new PC with Windows8 installed? I'm not worried about my current computer as everything on my hard drive can be uploaded onto my computer tech's on-site server and reloaded onto the new computer's hd but it's the compatibility of software with 8 that has me wondering? Will my current invoices saved on my hd that are in Microsoft Word document files also be accessible? These might be dumb questions, but I want to verify things up front. Thank you.

The windows 8 upgrade assistant did not catch everything when I used it. My network adapter was not compatible with windows 8 so I had to buy a new one in order to get online on windows 8.

The biggest problem I see with XP is internet explorer. The latest you can get is IE8 and many site are no longer supporting it. You will have to switch to Firefox or Google Chrome.

XP will die only in the minds of Microshaft, not in the real world. XP will keep right on running, with or without any so-called support from MS. They want you to think otherwise, but it just ain't so. I turned OFF MS Updates almost two years ago now and my system runs GREAT! I.E.? Not for years! For years I ran Netscape, because of problems in I.E., and then Firefox took over the reigns from Netscape and I've run it ever since the day it was released. (actually in Beta, before the final release ver 1.0)

After testing all the Beta versions of Windows 8 and then 8.1, I'm still running XP-Pro-SP3 on my main system and will continue to do so for as long as I keep on breathing. If your PC is still running OK, there is no reason at all to upgrade to Windows 8 or 8.1. NONE!

Cheers Mate!

It's not like XP will disappear from everybody's computers but by the way M$ is presenting it it looks like that. Past the SP3 I never used any of their "support" but used 3rd party programs and security software and no ill effects ever. Problems may arise if you want XP to run on newer HW, because of drivers etc. but if left on original HW it can theoretically run forever.

Thank you for asll of this input. As it stands at the moment, I use Firfox for my browser so no problem there. Also, as it stands now, I see no problem with Norton360 when I use Windows8 as my new OS. I realize XPPro I have now is obsolete....it's just that the updates after April whatever date make it officially vulnberable. That being said, I still wonderif I can still use existing programs like my old version of Photoshop 6.0 and other very basic software like Frontpage2002 etc. I assume when I convert to Windows8 that browsers like Firefox, Chrome etc. will be usable etc. So my questions are:

#1. How to verify further if Frontpage2002 will compatbly work with Windows8?
#2. How to verify if Photoshop 6.0 will be compatible on Windows8?
#3. Will existing files like Microsoft Word, notepad etc. Be accessible on Windows8?

Greatly appreciate your input.....Better yet, who is using W8 now? Your thoughts on how it performs compared to XPPPro?

unofficially ,it works much better than winxp pro,no comparison in my opinion, that is if you are buying a new computer to use win8 on,and not planning on using the old xp machine to run it .
,but its been years since I used xp pro ,
and again winxp will not become obsolete ,it will continue to work just fine on your computer ,granted they maybe things over time that will stop being compatible, it no more support from Microsoft that the only change that's going to happen on that date!!! vulnerable for some maybe but no so much the average user ,many people use xp with updates turned off []now with out issues
run the scan in link below on your xp procomputer and it will tell you what will work with win8

Microsoft have to present the worst-case scenario on what can happen.

Suppose there is some big hack after they end support for XP in April - if Microsoft hadn't gone on about it, some people might complain that Microsoft should have done more to warn them. As it is, if there is some big hack, Microsoft can say with a clear conscience that they did a lot to warn people.

For me, I didn't want to take the extra risk, so I upgraded from XP to 8.

Thanks to all that have assisted in my questions regarding Windows 8. I REALLY APPRECIATED that link from Caperjack "Windows Compatibility Center" to verify what programs of mine that I currently use on my Windows XP Pro (such as Photoshop 6.0 + HP printer OfficeJet Pro L7680 + a few others) and I typed those into that search function and discovered they will work when I switch over to Windows 8. This current desktop CPU was a custom built machine and I am using it for business....have all my invoices stored on it, have thousands of image files throughout various folders stored on it, have tutorials, templates and about 12 other websites I built (some are basic Frontpage sites) stores on it and other MS Word and Excel files. I did a Norton360 full system scan last month that when completed (took about 4 hours), said over a half million files were scanned and a minor malware was "quarantined" but overall, I plan to go to Windows 8 in a few months.
This current CPU is about 8 years old and most likely will buy a completely new similar system with more memory and simply transfer all files off this hard drive onto the new system that will have Windows 8 installed and use this current machine as a "storage / backup unit". Hope that makes sense.

Welcome back to the forum, tooner. :)

Although some of us were able to hold onto and use 8/8.1 on our older machines, it sounds like you made a very good, rational decision. It does sound like it's time for you to upgrade hardware, especially if you're using it for business. That's nothing to fool around with. A tax write off will help the matter.

Are you building another or do you have an OEM in mind? Just curious.

Hey HippsieGypsy......you hit the nail on the head regarding tax write off....another plus! It's just that this specific machine is almost 8 years old and considering all these other factors, the only logical "next step" is getting a new machine (fans go, old one has dust and dirt inside & throughout I am sure, want secure memory inside plus something with a new CD tray as this old one needs a bent paperclip to pop out the current tray....all that stuff), but it's been a work horse. So rather than potentially encounter problems by installing Windows 8 on THIS 8 year old work-horse, just get a new one (yes, probably an OEM) and have my tech person upload all data off this hard drive onto their on-site server and configure the new machine and download everything off their on-site server onto the hard drive of the new machine....I learned one trick - when you encounter problems (especially with a business PC), make sure the repair/service you look for has onsite server capabilities to upload all your hard drive data to, for safe storage while any work is being done on or to a computer. This should also work great when configuring a new system and the place I use is only a half mile away and they guarantee what they do. Rock solid, said & done. Good hearing your input!
