    Computer freezes on restart

So this is a problem I've had with my PC for a long time now, and just never got around to finding a solution. Half the time when I attempt to restart my computer the computer just freezes at the restart screen. So installing software generally results in a crash, I feel as though since my computer simply crashes during half the windows updates that issues are going to begin to stack up.

Any clue how to fix this?

    Hi, Welcome to Eight forums.

Try turning off "fast start up" on power options.

Thanks for the welcome : D

So I turned off fast restart... and it seems to have worked.
Why would that even be on by default ???

Nice to hear that you fixed the issue.

Regarding your question about the default check, Here is a tutorial on the topic. It explains most of it.

Ah I think I may have spoken too soon. I think it just got stuck restarting and just turned itself off and on again. I'm aware how silly that sounds as that is what a restart is. But I still don't think it's restarting correctly I think it just killed the power and turned itself back on again.
And yeah I've had it straight up freeze again during the restart process.

In that case, check if your PSU is giving enough power to the motherboard or not. If you have a spare PSU, try to run the PC on that for few hours and check. As you mentioned that it cuts off the power. Make sure that no cable inside the cabinet is hindering the CPU fan to revolve.

Actually, I had similar issue and the culprit was a cable which was stopping the CPU fan to move. As soon as the PC starts it used to shutdown and try to reboot. I checked and properly seated the cable.

Oh geez how embarrassing. I have no idea what a PSU is, so I'm quite certain I don't have a spare one lying around.
How would I even check if it were getting enough power?

A lack of power is a possibility, I said that the power is possibly being cutout during restarts.. But I really have no idea how to tell. It was an assumption. I'm probably completely wrong, and to that end would a lack of power not also contribute to other issues within the PC? The problem seems localized entirely within the restart process.

As for the fan.. I mean I can hear it. It's spinning around having a great time, but that's really just a guess. I assume if it was coming into contact with something in the PC it would probably sound more irregular?

Oh!! please don't be sorry. I should have been clearer. By PSU I meant Power supply unit. It is located at the back of the cabinet. But, if you are not comfortable with it, I will not suggest to check yourself. And yes, you are correct if something was in the way of the fan it might make a sound OR the fan might not be moving at all due to the hindrance. You can get someone who knows how to work on these.

    Have you ever run:

    sfc /scannow

    &

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    ???

They might not help but they won't hurt.
    Run the dism command first.
It hangs on 20% for a long time & suddenly finishes.

They need to be run in an administrator command prompt.

Don't worry about it Archer, after I wrote that post I actually thought about it and worked out what it stood for. So yeah alls good.

David I ran both commands and neither seemed to work.

I took a screenshot of the error messages they gave me for good measure.

    First is
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    second is sfc /scannow

In the reply window the images look tiny I hope that's not how they appear in the thread.

I get access is denied when trying to open the log files. Which is REALLY helpful.
