WOW!

That right there says a LOT about the Public's Perception of 8- And that HP is refusing to put up with MS - HP and other companies are out to SELL PCs.

From the fist day 8.1 was shoved at us and we were practically forced to get it - This particular Forum has been the busiest forum of all of forums on the net.

Ironically, I have found Windows 8 to be a lot more repairable than 7 - As much as I love 7. I actually Love Windows 8, but I mean 8, not 8.1

8.1 is just not the same, using it feels like I am wearing some sort of chastity belt over my face.

Windows 7 has a stripped down version of DISM

If Microsoft were to make one more Service pack for 7, and install a fully working DISM console, I think people would return to 7 in Droves. But that DISM command is what is keeping me on 8 and not 8.1

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Don't take this the wrong way, but how many average users actually use the DISM console? Or even know what it is? It doesn't strike me as something that would make people flock back to 7? Again this not meant as a flame or anything like that, I'm just wondering if I missed something somewhere?

I actually prefer 8.1 over 8.0. I liked the changes they made to Metro. I'm also looking forward to what the next update may bring. That being said, I have no problem with a manufacturer offering up what the buyers want. If HP didn't think they could sell 7 they wouldn't be offering it. It's always nice to have options and a choice.

wonder will this cause a uproar in a few of years ,from the people who take the offer and save 150.00$,when Microsoft discontinues support of win7 .maybe they will then look for a deal on Win9 or 10 ,I know they are likely to advance that date as they do will all windows os's .
its just been announced that Microsoft will keep updates/supporting MSE for winxp for another year

I think HP just wants to sell hardware by try to please everybody. Got an email today from HP and most desktops in current promotion are back to Windows 8.0 and even some 8.1.

Something wrong with your 7 installation, if you think 8.0 is faster. Perhaps it had been around a while. Newer instalaltion always appears a bit snappier.

I am using regular HD . 8x does take a bit longer to boot up, and the file copying is slower, but they provide the moving graph file copy dialog to take your mind off it.

in what way? just curious. both 8.1 and server 2012 after post boot is 6 or 7 seconds with my specs.
So isn't it hardware and software dependent? Double / triple booting - or virtual systems?
Only what I see counts.

How is terabytes in minutes slow?

Totally silent. No fans at all.

Not the first time when, I see such attempt. I suspect that HP is not happy with sales so to please more (conservative) crowd they "introduce" windows 7. Happened before, will happen again.

Each time when I see speed comparison between different windows I feel as this is waste of time even reading about it. Usually people compare installation on the same hardware but is OS similarly configured? Comparable number of processes, scheduled tasks, similarly configured GUI, net and so on? Usually not. So why bother? One OS but different OEM setup equals different boot time and different user's experience.

Windows 8.1 is (for me) first regularly used MS system since windows XP. I did not find it difficult (to configure and use) or quirky. Yes, some things aren't well thought. Security is (as in the times of windows XP) an issue, but I don't know any other OS that would be flawless.
Most of pros or against articles are pure PR bought by one or another company or just written by fanboys. Simply learn how to use it and all will be o.k.

I thought my boot was fast ,it showed a 22645ns

I don't want any word twisting. Event 100 is the same for everybody. That's why it is a good basis to compare notes. I am really interested to see his event 100 because my 8.1 is actually slower (28sec) - but on another much smaller machine.

I must admit at first I wasn't a fan of Windows 8 but as I began to tinker with it I realized its potential. People will always find something to complain about, that's a given. As a creature of habit I think it was not very smart of MS to start the OS with the Metro interface.

actually boot time has at least three values of interest:
MainPathBootTime - from windows logo to usable desktop
BootPostBootTime - from dekstop to finished loading of various background services
BootTime - summ of the above
Boot time part 1.png

as you see this was taken today, not year ago. Time listed with barebone win 8.1 was initially ~16s in Event ID 100, however I had to start some other services to make it working in a usable way so 19.5s on the laptop is what it is usable for me.
Again all is in the config and unless same parameters are set up, comparison between different windows version is far from valid. Event ID100 just represents how much one tweaked boot time and it is not comparable between different configurations. It is as good as any other subjective method of measuring (in this case) boot time.

regarding 7s boot time on win 7. Of course possible because on my laptop MainPathBootTime takes 7.9s so still debatable what you count.

Bottom line - it's a wash. No high flying theories needed.

I realize that there are a lot of parameters that can skew the nums, but ballpark Win7 and 8.1 have the same boot time. In fact on my systems where I run 7 and 8.1, the 7 boot is faster. But that may be because of my particular setup.

I think we should end the performance discussion. There is nothing to be gained by migrating to 8.1. If you want fast, go Linux.

Don't forget to factor in Windows 8's "Fast Boot". I would think for a true comparison you'd want to turn it off.

But . . . but . . . but . . . that's what makes bootup faster for me with Windows 8. :dinesh: If Windows 7 doesn't have that, and it takes an SSD card to make Win 7 boot faster, then, well, ummm, errr . . .
