Solved Can't play DVDs since 8.1 update.

We recently got the 8.1 update on our laptop. We are now unable to play DVDs in Windows Media Center. Cannot figure out the problem. I am not liking this update. :(

You're welcome.

It uses hardware acceleration by default as part of the EVR custom renderer.

What that means is that it uses the GPU to decode and present the video. You will notice that CPU use remains extremely low when only playing a video and doing nothing else on the system.

Then make sure it is set to decode MPEG-2, using its Video Decoder Configuration.

That should fix it.

MPC-HC is a great alternative to use, instead.

Great Advice, and VLC too, VLC will play what MPC-HC cannot. Use Both.

Use VLC for MKV and AVI files, MPC-HC for DVDs, it works really well that way. VLC needs no and has no extra codecs, for MPC HC only use that codec he said, don't get Shark Codec pack or anything similar. Just the basics.
