I decided to copy the NT kernel exe onto my desktop then extract it via 7-zip. Remember that "It is now safe to turn off your computer." text on older PCs? Well, eh looks like Windows 8.1 has that very text in its kernel. It is a bitmap file.

Pics or it didn't happen? Here ya go...

Now... why is this in the kernel still?

Just legacy cruft they haven't removed yet. Same with old icons and various other bits in the OS.

Dialer.exe was basically Skype from the early years of Windows. It's still in 8.1.

imageres.dll STILL has old icons from pre-Areo years.

The media folder in the Windows directory has a bunch of old system sounds, a handful of vista era sounds, and empty directories for the old sounds schemes in 7.

I just don't get why they don't chuck out the old and seriously unusable parts of Windows when they code the new versions. It's like, come on, clean your house once in a while...

Wouldn't this message still be needed if win 8 is installed on a computer with a manual power supply (ie a computer that cannot turn itself off)?
