    return to old start

I have been reading about a setup from WWW.ninite.com that will return my desktop back to the ClassicShell andthen Start Menu Settings.
Question; Will this return to the old Start desktop screw up anything in my o s? Next in doing this with my computer split, for two userswill I have to do it for both sides? I hate to admit this; 8.1 has got me doingnothing but reading and getting no place. No “work” done from opening the box!

Go here: Start Menu - Restore in Windows 8[1]=Taskbar%20Start%20Screen

    All the options are safe.

There's a simple feature of pinning folders that the start menu had onto the Start Screen. Just right click on almost anything from the Desktop, and hit Pin to Start. Arrange the new tiles as you wish. The only difference now is that the Start Screen can just be a huge start menu.

Or, you can change a default so instead of the Start Screen, you can have All Apps open and have Desktop apps show first.

Windows 8.1 takes some learning and configuration to make it YOUR personal computer.

Simple...yes. However as you have noticed, many people don't want to do it this way.

To the OP, classic shell won't cause you problems. I use it at work and its fine.

That may be true, however a good start menu does a lot more than a toolbar can - it can be opened with the keyboard, it shows recent programs and documents, it does searches, shuts down the computer, and in case of Classic Shell is ridiculously customizable.

So while part of it is a matter of knowledge, I think a bigger part is a matter of look, feel and usability.

They don't know how to right click and pin a tile to start? I'm pretty sure it's a whole lot more than this. I know HOW to customize the Start Screen, but I have absolutely no desire to actually use it.

The Start is just a launcher.

It would be more important to know how to use the apps screen.

Hi. I am running win 8.1. I bought my laptop with 8.1 installed, but I suspect that Dell took my win 8 and sold it to me after upgrading to 8.1. I would like for all of my clicks on the Start menu to return me to the Start menu, and not leave me on the Desktop. I recently abandoned StarDock's...

My computer came with 8.0. I upgraded to 8.1 because of issues with 8.0. When I click on most of the apps on the start page (store, weather, maps, calendar, etc.), the app briefly displays the green or blue or purple startup page and then flips me back to the start screen. If I move my cursor to...
Tiles Don't Load, Return to Start in Software and Apps
Most of my preinstalled app tiles suddenly don't load. Clicking on them takes me to their screen and immediately returns me to the start screen. Any thoughts.
How do I do this? Key combo? Thanks.
I don't know what they're thinking with this. Seems you can now click on the Stop button and the Task Manager will open. It will then show you programs Microsoft doesn't like or think should be running and highlights them. It then asks you "Do you want to Stop this process and use Metro...
