YES & NO, down to your UEFI/BIOS firmware setting.

Welcome to EightForums

As this a OEM manufacturer's PC with Pre-installed Windows 8.

1) Downgrade to Windows 7.
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/13326-downgrade-windows-8-windows-7-a.html
Warning you must have the UEFI/BIOS firmware setting in Step Three set.

Make sure you read the NOTE at Step three.

2) If Using a USB Pen drive on a PC with a UEFI BIOS.
USB Pen drive need to be formatted to FAT32 as in
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/15458-uefi-bootable-usb-flash-drive-create-windows.html
Take note of Step 11 for Windows 7.
Also you will need to use a USB 2.0 port, as there are no USB 3.0 drivers in Windows 7.

You will need to buy Windows 7.

If you have done many Win 7 installs in the past downgrading will not be a big issue. 1st make sure you have access to all the drivers you will need for te PC you are reverting to Win 7 (or even a different version of win 8 then came with your pc). The most important one is the wireless lan and or lan drivers as, once online you can download the rest. Te big step to most people is modifying the bios so you can boot to DVD/USB. The issue here is most new laptops are set to ONLY boot to the correct version of Win 8 via UEFI settings. Changing this is different on different PC's. Find out how to do this before you start. After you have this changed to allow booting to non UEFI installing a different operating system is pretty much the same as it has always been.

Also another option (and far easier then win 7 install) is to just install Classic Shell (Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements) and you can set up win 8 to look, feel, act allot more like Win 7 did.

Then again you could just put Classic Shell on her computer and make a gpedit to not open the lock screen she will be booting to a normal log on screen then directly to the desktop Just like win 7 does now with the normal start button. You get a Win 7 or XP desktop with the power of the new OS win 8.1
