Copying files to CD with Windows 8

Okay, here are the simple instructions from "Windows 8 for Dummies" (p. 109):

    1. Insert the blank CD into your disc burner. Then click or tap the Notification Box that appears in the screen's upper-right corner.

    2. When the Notification box asks how you'd like to proceed, click the box's Burn Files to a Disc option.

Windows 8 displays a Burn a Disc dialog box and asks you to create a title for the disc.
So I insert a blank CD into my new Dell Inspiron's D drive. Nothing happens. No "Notification box" or anything else appears in the screen's upper-right corner. So what am I supposed to do, please?

Try selecting the files you want to burn then right click and select send to your dvd drive. See if that works.

Good, that worked. Now it shows "files ready to be written to the disc." No instructions. Should I now click on the Share tab and click on Burn to Disc?

I clicked on "Burn to disc" under Share, and got the message that Windows can't read the disc in Drive D. Says if it's unformatted, it must first be formatted.

Why can't Windows 8 read a blank Memorex CD-R? My Windows XP didn't have to format them, it just copied onto them.

It should read them, mine does. Do you have the latest firmware for your drive and the latest Windows 8 updates?

Isn't Windows 8 supposed to update automatically? Windows XP did. A few days ago I clicked on the Music tile, and it said that this app needs an update. There were several others. I clicked on update, and it said they were "pending." Does that mean installing? Everytime I would go to the Store after that, in the upper right corner it said "installing 7 updates." I just checked and now it says "installing 2 updates." I don't know if it's the last of the 7 or what.

How do I check to see if the D Drive needs an update?

I was able to copy files onto a CD-RW. But I wonder why it takes Windows 8 several minutes to format the CD-RW before it will copy files onto it, when Windows XP would simply copy the files. Is this progress?

The D drive in my Dell Inspiron is described as a DVD RW. Does that mean that a CD-R will not even work in it, only a CD-RW? If so, I've been royally cheated.

,no that's not what it means ,it should read the cd-r disks..
the problem is that with win8 you can choose to use a cd like a usb thumb drive. {or a cd that will work in any cd player} ,it formats the disk and you can use it again to add more file until you finalise the disk.
what type of disk are you trying to create, what type od files are you trying to burn to the disk

I'm trying to copy Final Draft, Word, and pdf back-up files onto CDs. With Windows XP I always used CD-Rs, because I want them permanent as they are, not rewriteable on CD-RWs. (The files can be replaced on CD-Rs when revised.) I assumed when Windows 8 asked me if I wanted usb thumb drive (?) which was rewriteable that that was for CD-RWs, and the other was for what I wanted, CD-Rs that cannot be changed, so that's what I chose in trying to copy onto a CD-R, and Windows 8 tells me it can't read the disc.
