I suggest trying a third party burner like CDBurnerXP to see if it works. If it does, then at least you know it is the Windows interface. If it doesn't, I would think you have either a hardware problem or your Win8 is messed up.

Do you have any other discs to try? Are you only trying one particular disc?

Grabbing at straws here. Try deleting the drive in Device Manager and reboot. Let it be re-installed. See if that works.

Thanks, I'll download CDBurnerXP in the morning and see how it goes.

Well, for the time being at least, my computer is now burning CD-Rs, though I don't know why. I don't know what I did to correct the problem. But it no longer asks me which method to use, the usb or the cd/dvd player method. At least it didn't the last time.

According to Windows 8 for Dummies, when you insert a CD in the D drive, a Notification Box appears in the upper right corner of the screen. You click or tap this box to choose the Burn to Disc option. Does this box appear on your computer? It does not on mine. I would think that this missing step would prevent my computer from burning a disc, but it doesn't.

yes I get that for many different file types ,not sure when it stops giving that message, i think it will prompt every time you install a new/different app ,.but I don't bother with it because I have all the programs set as default that I want to use for all file types .you can do that in control panel ,Defaults Programs .quickest way to control panel and many other functions can be found by right click on the windows icon on the taskbar ,lower left corner

It's again not working. Right now the screen shows the folder on the disc and "Files waiting to be written to the disc." There are three of them waiting. I check them, go to Share, click on "Burn to disc," and nothing happens. Any suggestions?

May work now. I went to the control panel, when I finally found it, and it said "take no action" for blank CDs. I changed it to burn file to disc, and then copied a file with no problem.

I don't understand why the manufacturer would set it at "take no action" to start with. Any conceivable reason?

At the very least, its a safety net for you. For blank cd & dvd it prevents automatic burning when the tray closes. Good if your selection isn't complete or permanent yet.

For cd & dvd with media, at the very least it prevent "AutoRun"s from running malware to trash your pc with malware scripts etc.

For cd & dvd with media like music, video, games, documents etc. it gives you the option of those starting automatically when the tray closes.

In all cases, mine is set to ask me. 4 secs all it takes.

    I could be wrong too.
