Desktop icons always appear on start up

I just got a new laptop with Windows 8 and upgraded to Windows 8.1.

I don't like seeing my desktop icons, so I did right click on desktop -> View -> Show desktop icons so that they disappear. They're gone, but every time I restart my laptop, they appear again.

I'd like to solve the problem correctly without just deleting all of my desktop icons.

I went to the tutorial, clicked on "D" and then scrolled down to Desktop icons . . .

I haven't looked at the tutorial, but, if I understand your problem correctly, have you tried, right click the desktop and select personalise - change desktop icons.
fwiw. The method you have mentioned does, however, work for me.

I had that very problem on my ASUS laptop but sadly don't remember how I fixed it? I think it was one of the OEM supplied utilities that was doing it. I'd un check Show Desktop Icons and they would disappear, but on the next reboot that option would be checked again and they would be visible again. I thought I started a thread on it but can't find it at the moment.

Maybe:

Open regedit and navigate to : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
In the right hand payne double click HideIcons and change the REG_DWORD Value to 1

Close out of the Registry and restart your System.



Back up registry first, as usual.
