With my Android tablet I can make free calls in North America and from Europe to North America using the GrooveIP application. And that works very well. E.g. if I call a number within my Florida area code from Europe, I only dial the number - no country or area code. And it deos not cost a cent. From the US to Europe it is 2 cents per minute.

Now the wife got herself an Asus Transformer with 8.1 and wants the same facility. I have seen that Skype is now part of 8.1 and supposedly allows calls to landlines. There is also a program called 'Viper' that seems to work in a similar way.

Does anybody have experience with these programs. The wife wants it mainly to chat with her mom (3 times per day, LOL) from Europe to New York. Her mom could not handle a PC so it must be landline connections.

Hi there,

Your wife can call her Mom by using a computer or mobile device and Mom can pick up her landline phone thru Skype connection. She might give it a try and use the Skype Credit or pay as you go and see if this works out.
Skype Calling Rates - Cheap international calls & low-cost calling plans

I've used Viber from my Smart phone and it's Free, but I don't think they support landline connections.

Thanks for the info. But a paid service is no good. The amount of time they talk each day would require that I mortage the house. In Android the service is free - even from Europe to the US.

For landlines, you'll have to go thru VoIP service and none of them are free, sorry about that. You may compare their pricing plans here.

If your wife's Mom can use a Smart phone, I'd suggest Viber, it's completely Free of charge to call/text and it's unlimited.

Hmm, that's another challenge. The mom only has an old flip phone and the landline. I guess we'll have to lug the Nexus in addition to the Asus Transformer. Normally I wanted to leave the Nexus in the US (because of the navigation programs that Windows does not have either) and leave the Asus in Europe. But that plan won't work. Windows is just too much behind the times when it comes to apps.
