Hi - well you have more 'confidence' in me than I do ! LOL ---but I'm tenuous only because I know enough to know i ''dont''' know enough - but i may well bite the bullet & do the 8.1 upgrade but only after i transfer my Norton NIS into the new computer and before i'd save any folders/files or install Malwarebytes & SuperAntiSpyware that i currently have in this computer . Thanks so much & Happy New Year - Edythe

    Edythe,
If I were you, I would use Windows Defender and MalwareBytes and dump the other two you're using. I test AV products for a living and that's what I use on all of my home PC's. Just my advice...

No, you have a good amount of time support wise for just Windows 8. The service pack support date end is 2016, which is interesting as there probably won't ever be a service pack for Windows 8.

Update (ideally clean install) Windows 8.1 on your system. Don't be waiting around for Windows 8.2 this April as no such thing is in existence being known as 8.2. There will be an Update 1 for 8.1 in April, similar to Windows Phone's GDR update cycle.

Microsoft would MUCH rather have you on the latest version as it's better for you, the end user, and better for them since they only need to keep very few compilations of code up to date versus several. The only reason why xp has lasted so long support wise is a whole story that spans a decade.

For support purposes, MS are apparently treating 8.1 as if it's Windows 8 SP1.

So Windows 8 will be out of support 2 years after General Availability of Windows 8.1 (which apparently is January 2016, not October 2015; no idea how they work that one out, given 8.1 has been available to anyone since October 2015).

Windows 7 SP1 is supported, but Windows 7 without Service Packs is not supported. It's the same with Windows 8.
