I bought the old man an all in one computer for x-mas. He lives in a different province then me and I am still using vista so I can't really help him out with this issue. He has no idea how to get around the new interface
and figure out how to download photos and music from flash drive.
If anyone could give me a step by step so I can relay this to him ( keep in mind he is 80, so i need to keep it simple I would really appreciate it. Cheers

I don't know how much help this will be, but when I insert an SD card, a small pop up window comes up at the upper right, that I can click on, and it asks me what I want I want to do with the files. It's very brief, so if missed, you can click on My Computer (in desktop mode) to access the USB drive in File Explorer. I just tired inserting a flash drive in a USB port, and it automatically opened File Explorer, showing the flash drive. From there you can move the files anywhere you like, just like in previous versions of Windows.

If you click on a .mp3 or .jpeg file, Window will probably open the file with one of it's modern metro programs. Of course you can override that by installing the player and viewer of your choice and setting Windows to use those as the default programs.

I don't think your dad's age is as much of a factor as is his knowledge of working with computers. At least I hope not since if we're lucky, we'll all make to 80 and beyond. As much of a Windows fan as I am, I think Apple might be a better choice for the inexperienced computer user.

If he is having that much trouble with windows 8/8.1 start screen. Just have him download and install Classic Shell, this will make it look like vista/7. He should be able to navigate pretty well from then on. It's free!

Thanks guys. Managed to figure it out with your info. Bassfisher, just curious as to how long that program will last before Microsoft comes up with one of their weekly updates and kills the program? I'm sure it's gonna happen.
otherwise I would get him set up. Again thx guys!

It's been 2 years since 8 came out, so I don't see MS doing anything about it anytime soon. There are a few more out there, some free and some paid. I personally use Start8 from Stardock but it's $5 but well worth the $5.
