    Function keys and F1, F2, F3, etc.

Not sure how to explain this abstractly, so I will give an example. If I press the F12 key by itself, it turns off the wireless connection. If I want to actually input "F12," I have to enter fn-F12. What's the procedure for reversing this? I.e., I want to have to enter fn-F12 to turn off the wireless, etc. Isn't there a way to do this in the control panel of Windows 8?

It probably depends on the make of computer (presumably a laptop?).

There may be a utility provided by the laptop manufacturer, or you may need to get into the machine's BIOS or UEFI settings to change it.

On my Logitech Keyboards I can toggle that in the Setpoint settings. I haven't found any setting for it on my laptop. Mine works the way you want yours to. I have to press the fn key and the other F key to adjust screen brightness, sound volume, wireless on off etc. I'd actually like it the other way.

It's an HP Envy. Where would I go to change this setting?

Looks like it might be something like this:
Disable The Fn + Function Key Combination on Certain Models | HP Support

The page says you get into BIOS settings by pressing F10 at startup, but you may need to use this technique instead:
UEFI Firmware Settings - Boot to from inside Windows 8

how to disable function keys in General Support
Hi everyone, I just switched from Mac OS to Windows 8, and one of my biggest problems have been the function keys (F1-F12). On a mac, you could have the OS features "hidden" behind Fn, which enabled me to use function keys as shortcuts when using a software or playing. With Windows 8, the OS...
