Should I wait for windows 8.2

Should I wait for windows 8.2
I have a new laptop with windows 8 do I need to upgrade to 8.1 before 8.2 when it is available?
Also if I make the restore disc with 8 do I have to make new ones if I do upgrade?

    Thank you

Hello Mixerman, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Personally, I would recommend to upgrade to 8.1 for all the new features, and to be able to personalize it more. It could be a while before 8.2 is out.
Here's a list of that also shows the new features in Windows 8.1.

    Compare Windows 8.1 Editions

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Thanks Shawn.
    Is the upgrade still free?

Yep, it's free to all Windows 8 owners.

Best to do Windows 8.1 as there are several little details that refine Windows 8 and DO make a difference. Baby tiles!

But no honestly, Windows 8.2 is like at least a year away if not more. There is an expected update that should be coming down the pipeline this spring called Threshold, it probably will be for Windows 8.1 than anything and might have something called Cortana...

So far that is just an unconfirmed rumor that's not set in stone yet.

When 8.2 is released, it'll be an updated through the Store like 8.1 at first. It may be a bit before 8.2 is available in a retail box though.

Oh yeah, that rumor is a rumor. The only thing that COULD come out this month, doubt it, is the Threshold update. But that's more something I bet is coming around when Windows Phone 8.1 is released as there are some tidbits that WP 8.1 will be bringing to the table that will be brought onto Windows 8.1 and Xbox One as well. What that will be isn't know for sure, other than WinRT coding being tightened between the Windows PC and Windows Phone platforms as well as this digital assistant code named Cortana. Cortana is interesting as it'll be a cross of siri and google now and TellMe, but more awesome. If only they use Jen Taylor's voice...OH MY GOD! ('o')

Microsoft wouldn't released Windows 8.2 so suddenly. At most, what that Threshold update will be is more like Windows 8.1 Update 1, similar to how on Windows Phone 8's GDR1 release was a couple months after 8 came out.

My main computer is down for warranty repair on the motherboard. I mainly used Win 7 64 bit with that PC. I have my backup configured with dual boot Win 7/Win 8.1. However, as I have the new Sonar X3 recording studio software, I've been using Win 8.1 exclusively for the last two weeks and have not lost any capabilities and do not notice any difference. I'm using Start8 and do just about everything from the Win 7 lookalike desktop.

Before you do anything, make your recovery media, just in case. Some users have had issues after updating though the Store. If you end up with issues you can't resolve and want to go back to 8.0 you may need those recovery disks. You don't want to be totally reliant on the built in factory recovery utility as it could end up being broken during the update. I'm not trying to scare you off from doing the update, but it doesn't hurt to have a backup plan incase something unexpected happens. Especially if your using an OEM PC that didn't come with any install media. I like what 8.1 brought and have upgraded all but one of my PC's to 8.1. My wife's laptop is still running 8.0 only because I haven't gotten a round toit.
