Unable to save in Program Files

Hi, I just tried downloading an exe file to the "Program Files" folder & was not able to in Win 8.1 pro. I get the attached message. I believe I was able to save files in this folder in win 7. I am the admin. Any clue why this happens? Thanks!

    Hello Zilla,

Even in Windows 7 you are not allowed to save directly to a system folder location from an external source (ex: internet, USB).

Instead, you must save to one of your user folders (ex: Desktop, Downloads...), then you (if administrator) will be able to copy/move the file into a system folder and approve to do so.

This is done for security purposes to prevent external sources from having access to system files and folders.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

I'll bet, you have not yet installed "Take Ownership" or "Grant Admin Full Control" yet, have you?

That should be the first thing you do on a new install of any OS from Windows Vista onward.

I only use "Grant Admin Full Control" (easily downloaded from the internet). I call it, "Take Ownership" on Steroids!
Once it installs itself in your Right Click Context Menu, then you can Right Click on the "Program Files" folder and take ownership of it.
Then you can add or delete files from it, as you wish.

There are many such Folders in my own PC, that I've taken full control of, so I can do what I wish with those files.
Documents and Settings is another folder you will not be able to access, till you take ownership of it.

    Good Luck and Happy 2014!
