Pleasantly surprised at memory management...

I had read a few posts complaining of alarming RAM consumption in both 8.0 and 8.1 - seems maybe ill-behaved device drivers contributed. But with 8.1 on a Samsung 3-series, AMD Trinity board, I'm really surprised at how lean it runs. I have had video playing in one window [VLC 64 bit] in high def while running youtubes on the browser and multi windows open and the mem consumption will be around 2GB. seldom reaches even 3GB.

was this a big goal for Win 8?

Yes, this was a huge design consideration for Windows 8 to run as lean as it can. The slight debacle in 8.1 however is the app "tombstoning" versus closing and killing the app as in 8. When you close a WinRT Modern app, it technically isn't killed as you can go to the Task Manager and see. It's still in system memory. The reason why? Quicker resume time.

To thoroughly kill an app in 8.1, you close it as normal but when you are at the bottom of the screen, hold it for three seconds and you'll see the app window flip over to the slash window. It is dead.

If you're running low on available system RAM, Windows will just tombstone running apps and I think even go to the point of killing them.

good move on their part. multitasking is great for formal reviews in the media but for average users, all those tasks up and ready/running are not put to much practical use.

8.1 works very slick if one gets a good clean install.
