Computer completely freezes when gaming

Okay well, to put it shortly, I'm not too sure what to do with this issue I have. I recently upgraded both my motherboard to an Asus M5a99FX PRO R2.0 and my CPU to an AMD FX 8350 and I've been experiencing some complete freezes playing games like Battlefield 4, Shadow Warrior and Skyrim. In my old build (with a Gigabyte 880GM-USB3L and a Phenom II x4 955BE) the same games would perform okay and I never really experienced any crashes or freezes.

The problem now is that at what are apparently random intervals no longer than 15 minutes during gaming my cpmputer will completely freeze, audio stops, I cannot open the task manager and I even tried toggling Caps Lock and the LED on my keyboard wouldn't toggle. I would leave it stuck there for a couple of minute but nothing would happen, forcing me to hard reset the system.

I can use the computer for regular browsing and video streaming (I think I can alsop play some older games without freezing) without freezes too, which is kind of odd.

My PC specs would be:
  • OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
  • Mobo: Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0
  • CPU: AMD FX-8350 (not overclocked)
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 660Ti GC 3GB (not overclocked either)
  • Memory: 2 modules of some 4GB Kingston KVR1333D3N9/4G
  • PSU: Thermaltake TR2 RX 650W
  • HDD: Seagate ST2000DM001 (2TB)

So far what I've done to try to find a solution to the freezing is rolling back video drivers, then installing the most recent ones again, upgrading to the most recent version of the BIOS for my mobo and my chipset drivers, I've checked the connections on the mobo to make sure everything is installed fine, I've reseated the RAM and the GPU, I've run 2 cycles of memtest86+ to find no errors, I've also run Furmark's GPU burner and CPU burner (both for about 20 minutes) and I haven't crashed on them. My temperatures also don't get too excessive (CPU does't go over 43C and my GPU doesn't go over 64C). I also removed the Realtek Audio drivers and the freezing persisted.

I don't know what to do now to keep troubleshooting and would appreciate any help I could get. If something's wrong in my post I'll gladly correct it.

Check Asus for updated motherboard driver's and uefi updates. Also, after that check for video card driver updates and game updates. Also, you may need to manually enter your correct ram timings in the uefi. Here's the download link for your mobo for 8.1 drivers, software and uefi : ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download M5A99FX PRO R2.0

Okay, I did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 and then I updated all the drivers and I still experience the same crashes, I haven't tried to manually enter the correct ram timings because I have absolutely no idea of what to do, coule you maybe explain that a little bit further?

Okay first go this link and download CPU-z 1.67.1 CPU-Z CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting . Install it on your pc, but don't open it yet. Now right-click on it and select Run As Administrator. When CPU-z opens click on Memory and right each setting down on a piece of paper. These are your current ram timings. Now click on SPD. These are the ram timings your ram supports. Write these down on a 2nd piece of paper. Now compare that one with the first one. Do both match up ? Here's where it get's a little confusing, in the CPU-z SPD tab it lists numerous columns. You'll probably see one that says Frequency 685 MHz. that's for DDR3-1333 RAM, 800 MHz. would be DDR3-1600 RAM, etc. Use the setting that all match the specific frequency for your ram, as I circled in my screenshot. See how what I circled in the CPUzSPD screenshot matches what's on the CPUz Memory screenshot ? That's what you're looking for. As far as how to set these setting's in your UEFI or BIOS, go to the following link for further help. This link is Asus's Republic of Gamers forum. ASUS Republic of Gamers [ROG] | The Choice of Champions – Overclocking, PC Gaming, PC Modding, Support, Guides, Advice . Just click on the first one and then click on Post new thread and create a account and post for specific instructions for your laptop. I have a Asus mobo in my desktop and a Asus laptop. Each UEFI is different on the 2 and I'd rather not screw you up. P.S. Your CPU-z may not be black like mmine. I've got the CPU-z R.O.G. version which is black. The regular CPU-z is white or off-yellow in color. Not black, like mine.

Alright, I looked it up and manually set my ram timings to match between the memory tab and the SPD tab and it seemed like I could play for a little longer but I still ended up freezing. I can leave the system hanging there freezing for a while but it never shuts down and I never encounter a BSOD either.

When you updated your NVidia driver's, did you let it automatically remove your old NVidia display drivers ? What version NVidia driver's do you have ? The current non-beta one is 331.82. Here's the link for them.NVIDIA DRIVERS GeForce 331.82 Driver WHQL If I remember right you need to click Custom install to have it automatically remove the old drivers/PhysX, etc. If that doesn't fix it, it's either the game needs a update or one of your ram sticks could be bad. Also, I almost forgot, when you upgraded the motherboard, did you do a clean install of Windows afterward's ? That's a MUST DO, after a new motherboard, unless if it's the same model number motherboard you had before (I/e: Original motherboard was faulty and manufacturer replaced it with same model number motherboard)..

Yeah I have the same drivers you just listed, originally I didn't do a clean install but then I just performed a clean install of windows and reinstalled all the necessary drivers.
Is it certain that the RAM sticks are bad for this new setup or could it be something related to the PSU? Just to make sure, since they both represent kind of a large investment ATM.
I should also mention that these same sticks of ram performed just fine on my old mobo and cpu, could it be possible that switching to better parts makes these sticks incompatible to the point of them not being good enough?
If there's anything else I should try I gladly will.

Try this set your uefi to optimized defaults and make sure you manually enter the ram timings and press F10 to save it and see what happens. If you still have issues, do a search for Memtest86+. Leave just one ram stick in and run it. Do that until you've tested each ram stick by themselves. If they all pass , it could very well be something on the motherboard isn't working. Also, for the hell of it download CCleaner from CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download . Install it (custom install - unless you want the Google crap) and run it's Registry Cleaner. Let it remove whatever it find's and restart your pc.

I cleaned the registry and then loaded the optimized defaults and then reassigned the ram timings. I will do a memtest if required, but I already performed one previously, with both sticks at the same time and it passed 2 cycles. I figured that if I got an error I could then test each stick individually, would there be a difference if I ran them one by one?

I might be pushed to believe that, since this PSU I got has been running for 2 years of some pretty heavy gaming and it's only 650W, but given that I have no other power supply to test on it's pretty complicated to really confirm whether it is in fact the PSU or not.
Right now I checked the CPU pins just to make sure none were bent or damaged and they were all in perfect condition.

Dude, your ram timings are wrong. That's the problem Your ram timings should match the 800MHz. CPU-Z SPD tab. They don't and are set wrong. The setting's in CPU-z's Memory tab are what your current ram timings are in the uefi. Write down the 800MHZ. setting's from the CPU-z SPD tab and set your uefi ram timings to those. They should be 9.0 - 9- 9 -24- 41- 2T. Not 11.0- 11- 11- 28- 41.
