    Searching for "~" crashes computer

I lost a word doc(2013) on a 8.1 computer and was searching "This PC" for everything including "~" in an attempt to find a tmp file or??. About 4/5th of way thru the search I get a message "Search Results in this PC (not Responding)" Its repeatable. Is it my machine, 8.1 or me?

If I enter ~ in Everything Search I get 6700 results. You may have many more. Maybe it's a bit much for Explorer. Try another search program to see how many hits you are dealing with.

104,316 results here. I would run Chkdsk on the drive to make sure its ok and also check event viewer for any errors

Did you install anything with a shell extension right around the time the problem started? You might just have an unstable one. Or any Explorer "enhancement" like something that added toolbars, tabs etc..?

Chkdsk ran 3 times, no errors. There were some errors in the event logs basically telling me that explorer had stopped responding. Nothing installed etc during this time, no email etc, strictly a word document.

    Why would you ever do a search for " ~ " ???
It's a Wild Card, so to speak, and usually just used in conjunction with other letters like in the suffix, ' .~mp '.
That is a not too often used version of a Temporary file. I think that doing a search for " ~ " by itself, would be considered by Windows a miss-operation and it wouldn't know what to do with it. I'd not do that again if I were you. Your OS might commit suicide!

Try Agent Ransack - Free File Searching Utility, maybe adding some before & after dates to the search. Good luck.

    I would follow
    4wd 's
suggestion to use a heavy duty search engine. Explorer has hundreds os extensions hanging off it and limitations on path length that are a throwback to ansi "maxpath" systems. It's okay for quick searches. But for a workload a specific tool is better.

Multiple places on the internet suggest using it, .tmp usually start with a ~. My W7 machine has 262K count, Its the 8.1 machine where the doc was lost and has trouble with it. I have used this and multiple other "searches" with wild cards etc. and so far have not had any luck. D/L ing Ransack now
