Solved Take ownership of everything

"Take ownership of everything" resumes it pretty much.

I am the only user (and Admin) in my Win 8.1 Core 64 bit system and I need to be able to change the registry and all files and folders on my system on EVERY drive, internal or external (the latter whether NTFS or FAT).

I went through the procedure of taking ownership of an external USB drive (to which the drive letter G got assigned) and all went fine, then I unplugged the flashdrive and I plugged a new one that also got the G letter (I was optimist/naive enough to believe that the previous procedure would have sufficed, but apparently I was wrong!). Do I need to go through all that again for every single USB device I plug in??? Really???

Now, while I see the necessity of tightening security across the system for the average user (I do not want to start a debate on that) I would really like to have the chance to just use my own computer the way I want.

Can somebody please provide a simple and straightforward method that can PERMANENTLY enable me to do that without having to click on allow this or permit that every time I just want to add a single vowel to a .txt file?

Apologies for my excessive ranting :)

Thanks

Hello Archimede, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you can have your external USB drives formatted with FAT32 instead off NTFS to no longer have NTFS permissions carried over to them. You will have full access on a FAT32 drive.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Hehe Brink,

Thanks, but that is unfortunately not an option for various reasons (among which I use Everything, that as you know, only works on NTFS).

I wrote "(the latter whether NTFS or FAT)", probably I should have been writing "(the latter whether NTFS or FAT - I use both and need to keep using both)".

I am new to Win 8 and I sincerely hope that I do not have to regret that I just bought 2 new UEFI laptops that can only run Win 8 (i.e. they are not downgradeable)

So far I can only say that I could do the same things, a lot faster and especially without having to jump through hoops on my good ol' Win XP lappy.

You could enable and sign in to the built-in elevated Administrator account to have the same full unrestricted access as in XP, but you will not be able to open or use any of the modern apps or UI screens while signed in to an elevated account like this.

I'm not sure why two different USB drives were assigned the same drive letter, but you could change the drive letter of one of them using an option in the tutorial below to hopefully have it stick with that letter.
As far as permissions go, you would need to both take ownership and set permissions to have "full control" with either your user account or the Administrators group. You DO NOT want to take ownership of the entire C: drive or a complete system folder (ex: C:\Windows). Doing so could lead to system instability, and having to reinstall Windows.

That elevates all administrator accounts to be the same as the built-in elevated "Administrator" account.

Just note that doing that will prevent you from being able to open all modern apps, Store, and any modern UI screens (ex: PC settings) since they will not open while signed in to an "elevated" account.

Hi Shawn (and Happy New Year on this early morning of January 1st 2014) ;)

I am aware of the fact that I will not "avail" myself of the Metro Apps but since I am not 12 y.o. and I come straight from XP I guess that I will not really miss them :D

Thanks anyway for the info (that I must point out Gman was kind enough to highlight and label as WARNING in his post)... Your advice has been noted and was truly appreciated.

Surely there will be other opportunities to correspond and to enjoy your very nice tutorials since I just landed on planet Win 8.
