    basic question

Is there a tutorial here or somewhere on the net that will walk a person through using Windows 8 and the differences between 8 and 7?

For instance, although I haven't played with it much, I'm not sure how to get to the directory tree with Win 8...doesn't seem to be a link to "my Computer."

It's easy to have the File Explorer that is pinned to the Taskbar open to Computer. Right click on File Explorer icon in Taskbar. In the popup menu you'll see the icon for File Explorer. Right click on it, then left click Properties. Replace what is in the Target line with this:
    C:\Windows\explorer.exe ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

On the Desktop side you can make the system feel more like Windows 7 by using a software that enables the Start Button. See this tutorial:

On the Start Screen side of things, that's new to me too. I just got W8 about 2 months ago. Mostly I use the Desktop programs. The App I use most from the Start Screen in the local weather.

Windows 8 can be a bit difficult to use compared to Windows 7. It can be tamed though.

    Start Button:
If you install Classic Shell (free) or Stardock's Start8 ($4.99) or similar software then you can have the Start button as it was in Windows 7 and boot directly to the Desktop. You can still play with Metro stuff but it's not forced on you.

    Windows 7 Gadgets:
Windows 7 Gadgets are also available if you want them: 8GadgetPack - Gadgets for Windows 8

I find UAC extremely annoying. If you do too then to (mostly) disable UAC, Press Windows key + R to open the Run window.
    Type msconfig and press Enter.
    Click on the Tools tab.
Select Change UAC settings and click Launch.
Move the slider all the way to the bottom then click OK.
Some parts of UAC will still be alive, so to completely disable it you need to change a registry key.

    Key: EnableLUA
    Set the value to 0

You cannot use any Metro Apps or the App Store when UAC is disabled. If you've gone this far, you can also disable all hot corners so you will not get any of the Windows Charms popups. Just check the Classic Shell and Start8 options to do this.

Yeah, I've been resisting Windows 8. But with the new tablet/notebook I didn'thave a choice. and the computer is for my wife anyway. She wants the touch aspects. Will classic shell interfere with the touch screen abilities>

    And what is UAC?

If Metro is the interface your wife wants then Classic Shell is not a good idea.

For UAC, see here: What is User Account Control? - Microsoft Windows Help
