Well, finally installed Win 8 dev. I tried to install the 64-bit, but it stopped uncompressing at 98 or 99% - several tries. Of course the iso might have been corrupt. I checked online forums and saw others had mentioned this problem. So I humbly installed the 32-bit OS. Worked first time. Oh, using Virtualbox. The tiles take a little getting used to. It was a little startling, seeing the desktop overlaid with metro. I kept wanting to click on the "Start" on the screen, but of course nothing happened. It looked like it was geared for social media, which is fine except I'm looking at it from an academic standpoint. Of course now I have to look at the customization features, which will make it more palatable for me. So if I installed a suite of applications, would they all reside as tiles? And would I have folder on top for these files, similar to Android and IOS? Is MS moving in the direction of touch screens? It just has that look to it. I like the idea of cloud computing, as we need to be able to access data from multiple locations.

Where do I launch Start to get to a command prompt? Or was the Start on the screen the location, but just not working on my pc?

Does anyone have suggestions for a good online introduction to Win 8?

    Thanks!

    Lemur

Move the cursor to bottom left corner, click Search, click Apps on the right side and you'll find cmd prompt among applications. HTH.
    EDIT:
You can also pin cmd prompt or any program you use regularly to Start metro screen.Click image for larger version

    Hi Brummyfan!

Not at my Win 8 pc right now. If I move my cursor the the bottom left, is there a search button or some indication to click there? I don't recall seeing it and don't see it your your screen capture (though I like your layout).

    Hello Lemur,

Yep, the search option is in the Start menu.

If you like, you could flip through Tutorial Index to help get more familiar with Windows 8.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Just wonder what happened to my son. Installing WDP as I recommended and remove it few days later, no more looking back

I would normally agree or disagree, according to merit. But as I have not yet had the chance to use Windows 8, only the developer release, I cannot comment.

It'll be hard to say so far since this is still just a developer preview copy, and may not have all features enabled yet. The beta copy should help give us all a more accurate idea of what Windows 8 will be like.

We just got our first W8 machine... a laptop... and have a 2nd one coming. So it's time for me to learn something about this new (to me) OS. I'm hardly new to Windows... coming from DOS/OS2 Warp/Win3.x/Win95/Win98/Win2k/WinXP/Vista/W7 and have been a member of the SevenForums for a good while. I...

When I came across Microsoft's offer of downloading this new version of Windows for 24.00, I thought, what's the catch? I upgrade on of my older lap tops to Windows 8. It's a pretty beefy computer. The upgrade went well. But I do not like this new version and will not upgrade any of my other computers until Microsoft fixes many small problems. Problems I have encountered: 1) The shut down button was...
As a bunch of us just got the retail Win8 Pro version off of TechNet, good time to start a discussion of what actually is there vs. what was rumored. 1. Aero IS gone. 2. Gadgets ARE gone. 3. Windows store has a lot more stuff. I don't see anything that smacks of payment yet. 4. As rumored,...
