Well, finally installed Win 8 dev. I tried to install the 64-bit, but it stopped uncompressing at 98 or 99% - several tries. Of course the iso might have been corrupt. I checked online forums and saw others had mentioned this problem. So I humbly installed the 32-bit OS. Worked first time. Oh, using Virtualbox. The tiles take a little getting used to. It was a little startling, seeing the desktop overlaid with metro. I kept wanting to click on the "Start" on the screen, but of course nothing happened. It looked like it was geared for social media, which is fine except I'm looking at it from an academic standpoint. Of course now I have to look at the customization features, which will make it more palatable for me. So if I installed a suite of applications, would they all reside as tiles? And would I have folder on top for these files, similar to Android and IOS? Is MS moving in the direction of touch screens? It just has that look to it. I like the idea of cloud computing, as we need to be able to access data from multiple locations.

Where do I launch Start to get to a command prompt? Or was the Start on the screen the location, but just not working on my pc?

Does anyone have suggestions for a good online introduction to Win 8?

Thanks!

Lemur

Hi Brummyfan!

Not at my Win 8 pc right now. If I move my cursor the the bottom left, is there a search button or some indication to click there? I don't recall seeing it and don't see it your your screen capture (though I like your layout).

Hello Lemur,

Yep, the search option is in the Start menu. :)

If you like, you could flip through Tutorial Index to help get more familiar with Windows 8.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I would normally agree or disagree, according to merit. But as I have not yet had the chance to use Windows 8, only the developer release, I cannot comment.

It'll be hard to say so far since this is still just a developer preview copy, and may not have all features enabled yet. The beta copy should help give us all a more accurate idea of what Windows 8 will be like.

Any idea on the release date for the beta? I have to agree on first getting up and running on the second drive here for a good lookover. But I would hate to click a button every time to reach a desktop! That would be a definite downside for 8 right there.

frankly if the metro interface goes out with the desktop version like that i'll buy an apple....it's that disgusting.

would be great on a phone or tablet...but totally pointless on a desktop, it could be made to be useful but with some serious work but i don't think desktops should be emulating how phones are displayed.

i have far to many initial issues with it, the lack of an intuitive interface is a problem, people new to computers and older consumers or those that just don't care and want it to work for them without needing a degree should be able to yet of the few i showed this too....the responces were not good they had no idea how to do anything they couldn't find office or any way to write a doc and didn't have a clue how to get to their programme list without a lot of guidance, that is not how it should work.

it's obvious they spent to much time trying to get it to work like a phone instead of an actual computer os.

I think this goes to show that we've become so accustom to an interface, we don't ever want to see it change. Look at the liniage of Windows, the Start menu and a taskbar in every version since 95. There has been better navigation, but it's still the same as was in the last Windows version, as it was in the last, as it was in the last, and on and on. It's time for a change.

But honestly, Windows 8 isn't too difficult to use, you need to put forth some time, it is always interesting to discover something new. I bet this is the same experience people felt when going from DOS to a GUI OS. Or even, how people felt going from Windows 3 to Windows 95.

frankly if the metro interface goes out with the desktop version like that i'll buy an apple....it's that disgusting.

would be great on a phone or tablet...but totally pointless on a desktop, it could be made to be useful but with some serious work but i don't think desktops should be emulating how phones are displayed.

i have far to many initial issues with it, the lack of an intuitive interface is a problem, people new to computers and older consumers or those that just don't care and want it to work for them without needing a degree should be able to yet of the few i showed this too....the responces were not good they had no idea how to do anything they couldn't find office or any way to write a doc and didn't have a clue how to get to their programme list without a lot of guidance, that is not how it should work.

it's obvious they spent to much time trying to get it to work like a phone instead of an actual computer os.

Or even, how people felt going from Windows 3 to Windows 95.

i agree, but Microsoft's customer base isn't full of IT guru's or people that want to relearn an OS, there should be some familiar menu structures ie a program file listing within the desktop gui as per previous versions, that way at least they can create and maintain all forms of change they want and still cater to customers that find change like this more difficult to deal with.

it's safe to assume that the metro interface will be used by most when we get it, and have all of our applications available which is a good thing as i can see it being very good once customisation becomes more natural.

unfortunately it means i'm going to have to deal with yet more questions and frustrated customers...some of which can barely work xp/vista/win 7 as it is win 8 is going to be completely alien to them.
