Number Lock- Always has to be turned on for PIN & Login +

    ASUS M51AC-US005S i5 16GB DDR3 1600 8 upgraded to 8.1

Right out of the box the Num Lock did not work.
Tried different keyboards. It is enabled in the BIOS.
Can't find anything in the manual for it. M51AC Manual

Its a pain to engage number lock before typing PIN to login and then engaging it again after logging in to use the number keypad.

    Thank you

I just tried leaving it on & restarting.
It was on when I restarted.

And that is how it has always worked for me. But now, this machine wants to be stubborn.
Its on now but soon as I logoff the Num Lock light goes out. In order to log back in with PIN, I have to press the Num Lock first.

I just remembered the number keys above alpha keys on keyboard. Actually just noticed them. I haven't used them in years.
So if nothing else, use them to login & then engage Num Lock until a solution is found.

Can't go to ASUS site because once I click Support browser changes page and little gear spins & SPINS (overnite once when I let it)

Please offer some solutions. This is insane. Remembering to press Num Lock every time or use number keys above alpha keys.

    I think I found a solution.

I found a Powershell script to activate Num Lock on login.

I opened Powershell & pasted it in.
A line appeared below the first one with something about Num Lock.
I pressed Enter & a basic line with nothing after the >.
I closed the Powershell window & restarted.

Restarting proceeded a while & suddenly the computer shut off with the power light blinking.
    That freaked me out.

I pressed the power button on the computer & it started going again.

When it got to the login screen with my picture & password box the Num Lock light was on.
I let it boot up & load everything & then restarted & at the login screen the Num Lock light was on.

    The code is:

    Code:
    $wsh = New-Object -ComObject WScript.Shell
    $wsh.SendKeys('{NUMLOCK}')
    It is attached also.

    numlock.txt

    To Paste into Powershell:

    just remembered this +
only time I ever had this happen to me was a few years back on a computer I was fixing/working on , the cause in my case was a bad bios battery , that likely not what's happening here ,but just a thought

It seems to be a common problem and there isn't a one size fixes all solution.
I appreciate your suggestion Dave but it didn't work on this stubborn pc.
I did run across a successful fix but concerned it may have messed with Fast Boot or Security.

    1. Run Registry Editor.
    2. Move to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard.
    3. Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators to 2.

Note: The value was 2147483648 before changing to 2

I tried the registry thing too & it didn't work for me.
It changed back to 0 after restarting.

    Thanks for the rep.

So I disabled the lock screen as it's just another unnecessary click to login, but what I want to be able to do is customise the background image of the login/ctrl+alt+del screen. I know you can change the "accent" colour but I don't want to use a solid colour. How do I go about this?
