Help with metro start & some other things

I dual booted Windows 8 with XP on my Samsung Q1 a while ago. I've been trying to solve 3 main problems.

    1) The first was Win 8 installed with the regular start menu as default (not the metro style) and tools/registry won't change it back.

    2) On Windows 8 start-up, an icon of a monitor with an x is present, and I was wondering what that meant.

    3) After a while of not using the tablet (while it's running), the touchscreen won't work.

Also, if anyone knows how to use features such as slides and sliding through the metro interface (not scroll) with a mouse, that would be GREAT!

    Thanks, any help appreciated.

    Win7-8 Dual Boot on a Commodore 64

I can't be of much help with the Q1. The only tablets I've held were the big ones when I played Moses in a fifth grade play.
And I cannot conceive of why the mouse-pointer can't replicate a finger. It probably CAN, but it certainly is not implemented
    in the WDP.

As for mouse gestures that do work, I've only found one.
When at the Metro START screen, scrolling down moves the screen to the left and scrolling up moves the screen to the right.
There will be more mouse-centric moves in the beta, but not enough for me.

    bye for now

Easy one, just download MetroTweakUI, and that will solve that. Brink has a nice tutorial on how to use it.

Is this the MetroTweakUI you were referring to? If so, I checked the "Enable Metro Start Menu and Explorer Ribbon" and restarted my pc, but no luck. Registry tweak didn't work either. I also tried the download in Brink's tutorial but no luck. May I should just reinstall windows 8 (again)

Also, thanks Windunce. The mouse scroll tip makes the Metro UI a little more easy to navigate.

Does anyone know how to replicate the mouse as a finger/stylus, or what the monitor with an X icon means?
    Thanks.

Very strange, and YOU just might want to do a COMPLETE format and re-install Windows 8DP. Or just wait the couple of weeks
for the beta's release. If/When you do the format, make sure to do a complete format, and then use Norton 360 DVD/CD-ROM (if you have it) or download the current free beta, burn it to DVD/Disc, and start up your PC with the disc in the drive, and when it gets to the Norton screen, choose to run the tests and that way you know YOUR hard drive won't have a problem reboot when Norton tells you too, and remember to remove the disc from the drive, and replace that disc with the Windows 8 (RC)

Thanks, I'll look into the Norton 360 software. I think this is it, right? Just about 15 minutes ago I tried the system refresh from the Windows 8 control panel, and that fixed the metro problem. There must of been a faulty install the first time around. I'll see if the Norton scan turns up any problems with my hard drive.

Okay, so now that the metro thing and touch-screen problems have been solved (after system refresh), I was wondering what the monitor with an x icon meant. It appears right after windows loads. I think I need to install the Samsung Q1 Graphics driver, but It gives an unknown error when run in windows 8, with compatibility settings on, and running it as an administrator.

I'm getting from what you are describing pwstegman, that you have a dual or had a dual monitor setup, if that is the case, re-connect or turn on the second monitor.

I currently use only one monitor on my Q1. From the looks of things the video/graphics driver won't install due to system requirements, but it installed perfectly when XP was on the Q1. Should I open it up and disconnect then reconnect the monitor. It looks like this (but dual booting Win 8 and XP). Thanks.
