Major Windows 8 issue -- I returned the Computer

I recently purchased a new notebook equipped with Windows 8. After a few days it locked up at the log on screen.

I am reasonably computer savvy, and would normally have tried the following three steps:

    1. Boot into safe mode.
    2. Boot using the Windows Repair disk and run System Restore
    3. Restore a System Image (created a few days earlier)

However, as far as I know these options can only be performed AFTER the boot process completes. i.e. Tapping the F8, F5, ESC, etc in Windows 7 and prior doesn't work in Windows 8.

I returned the machine because I was travelling for the next three weeks.

However, I am now curious. Is there something else I could have done, that I missed?

ADDITIONAL INFO: I also have a new Dell desktop with Windows 8, so I just tried mashing F8 and sure enough I got a Boot Option menu. I know that I tried this on the notebook, without any success. Is it possible that Dell provides this, but Asus (my notebook) did not?

What did you make the image with ?
Did you insert the usb(?) & restart?

Did you insert the repair disk then restart ?

Did you try pressing the Delete key when you restarted ?

I use BootUI tuner from winaero:

    WinAero: Boot UI Tuner

It adds boot options at startup.
Press Enter to continue normal boot.

I use Macrium Reflect to make images.
It has an option to add itself to boot options at startup.

Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

That's all I can think of.

Asus uses the PC Settings/Advanced Startup to access the UEFI stuff.

But if you get a replacement, you can change the Boot GUI to Legacy Mode using BCDedit, and then you can use F8 to get into Safe Mode just like Windows 7.

Sometimes, Windows 8 will lock up at that point, cos it was installing updates, and they are stalled, usually 3 or 4 hard-reboots frees it. Ive had this happen on one Asus laptop and two Dell laptops, while updating, they stalled right at that spot.

The best thing to do with any Windows 8 system is to shut off all Automatic Updates, and this won't happen.

The Windows 8 Fast Startup can cause this. On my ASUS K75DE, if I have fast startup enabled I can not access my BIOS during Boot up with the F2 Key. ESC won't work either for my one time boot menu. The only way in is using the PC Settings/Advanced Startup to access UEFI. If I turn Fast Startup off in Windows 8 they both work as advertised. Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 8 Likely has something to do with the PC being in a hybrid sleep mode and not really fully off or shutdown.

Yah, thats because "fast startup" is some rendition of Hibernation, and many laptops when hibernated go into a different power-off state then normal. so all F Keys are inaccessible.

Toshiba Satellites do this, I was able to bust it free from that state by booting it, then holding the power button for longer than 5 seconds, 10 seconds should do it.

It seems these geniuses never got past what would happen if the machine cannot actually BOOT UP, so they may have removed all of the old ways to get back into a regular startup mode.

Yes, its the hybrid sleep mode that does it. I disable hibernation from the command prompt anyway as I never use sleep mode or hibernate. That kills the hibefill.sys file that is just wasting space on my SSD drive. With the SSD my laptop boots up in 10 seconds even without Fast Startup.

If any goes wrong, they want you to throw it away and buy a brand new machine (like a phone/tablet user would).

At least Apple gives you a whole year for that to happen, then the iPhone/iPad that you paid 700 bucks for is only worth 25 bucks.

Well, not iPads, they got a higher resale value.
